The Mount Vernon Fire Department is reminding residents to stay safe this holiday season, especially when it comes to candles. The department warns that candles are linked to 11 percent of Christmas tree fires. They say the risk rises throughout the year, with candles causing about one-third of all fires, and that number jumps to 46 percent in December. Fire officials are urging everyone to keep candles away from anything flammable and to stay alert when they’re in use. They say their goal is simple: zero fires, and they believe that with community awareness, it’s achievable.

The redistricting bill, which cleared the Indiana House last week, failed in the Senate on a 31–19 vote. The map was created by the National Republican Redistricting Trust and was designed to give Republicans control of all nine of Indiana’s congressional districts. It also would have divided Indianapolis into four districts stretching into rural parts of the state.
Governor Mike Braun expressed frustration after the bill’s defeat, saying he was “very disappointed that a small group of misguided State Senators have partnered with Democrats” to oppose what he called an opportunity to protect Hoosiers with fair maps.
Democrats called the vote a win for local voices. State Representative Alex Burton of Evansville said, “Today proves that Hoosier voters and voices matter. Outside influence sought to force redistricting and it didn’t work — even in the face of loud voices, swatting, and bomb threats.”
The future of redistricting efforts in Indiana remains uncertain.
Today will be a somber day at the University of Evansville. School officials are expected to gather at Memorial Plaza to remember the lives lost in the plane crash that killed 29 people on December 13th, 1977. The ceremony will be marked with a message from Reverend Andy Payton, remarks from President Pietruszkiewicz, a reading of all 29 names, and a moment of silence.
