One man is behind bars following a lengthy police pursuit Monday night in Mount Vernon. Mount Vernon Police say officers were called to the area of West 6th Street just after 11:00 PM. on reports of a vehicle driving recklessly and causing property damage. As officers searched the area, additional calls came in reporting the same vehicle. Police say officers eventually spotted the car turning onto Main Street from Vista Drive. The vehicle reportedly partially ran off the roadway before continuing onto Lawrence Drive, where it drove through several yards, destroying mailboxes and landscaping. Officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but police say the driver, identified as Brandon Mattingly of Mount Vernon, refused to pull over, leading officers on a pursuit that lasted more than 20 minutes. Authorities say that during the chase, the vehicle lost a rear tire but continued to flee. Police also report that the driver intentionally struck the driver’s side of a patrol vehicle. Officers were ultimately able to stop the vehicle by boxing it in and taking Mattingly into custody. Police say Mattingly showed possible signs of intoxication and refused to submit to chemical testing. During the incident, one Mount Vernon Police officer and one Posey County Sheriff’s deputy were injured. Three police vehicles were also damaged. Mattingly was taken to the Posey County Jail and is facing multiple charges, including criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, resisting law enforcement, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, and reckless driving resulting in property damage. Police say the investigation remains ongoing.
