Week 4 of the High School Football regular season is tonight, and the Mt. Vernon Wildcats are at home as they take on the South Spencer Rebels at 7:00 PM. Mt. Vernon is 2-1 on the season and they will try to bounce back after their week 3 loss at home against Gibson Southern. South Spencer is winless on the year at 0-3. North Posey Football is also home tonight as they play Tell City at 7:00 PM. The Vikings have a record of 2-1 and hope to avoid back-to-back losses after losing at North Knox last week. Yesterday, students at Marrs Elementary took part in a heartfelt 9/11 remembrance ceremony gathering outside around the flagpole to honor the lives lost in the September 11th attacks. With the American flag at half-staff, students recited the Pledge of Allegiance and observed a moment of silence as part of Patriot Day. According to a post on the school’s Facebook page, the ceremony was both solemn and meaningful especially for a generation not yet born when the attacks occurred. School leaders say they plan to hold this ceremony every year, hoping to instill a sense of history, respect, and remembrance in their students.
Multiple tri-state counties, including Posey County, have been placed under a burn ban due to dry conditions in the area. Other counties in Indiana that are under a burn ban include Vanderburgh County, Warrick County, and Spencer County. In Kentucky, Henderson County, Hopkins County, and Union County are also under a burn ban.
Mt. Vernon River Days begins today. It all starts at 11:00 AM with the opening ceremony with the American Legion Post #5 at the stage and events continue up until 10:30 PM this evening. Saturday’s events kick off at 8:00 AM with the 5K Run and events continue until 8:00 PM. For more information on Mt. Last night at the University of Southern Indiana a rally was held after Charlie Kirk was shot and killed during an event at a college campus in Utah. The "Justice for Charlie" event took place Thursday night from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the USI Quad. Organizers say they aimed to honor Kirk and call for justice peacefully. During the event, local political and faith-based speakers shared their remarks.
In local high school sports on Thursday…North Posey Volleyball beat Memorial in straight sets at home. The Vikings improve to 9-2.
North Posey Boys Soccer won at home in overtime, 3-2 vs Pike Central. They improve to 5-3 on the season.
Mt. Vernon Girls Soccer picked up a 4-2 win at home over South Spencer. The Wildcats have won 4-straight matches and are 7-3 on the year.
From local college sports yesterday…Evansville Women’s Soccer took on UT Martin on the road and neither team scored a goal. The Purple Aces with the road result are now 4-1-1 overall.
There is some Friday night College Football this evening as the Indiana Hoosiers take on the Indiana State Sycamores in Bloomington at 5:30 PM. Both teams are 2-0.
In Major League Baseball on Thursday…the St. Louis Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, and Cincinnati Reds all had the day off.
Tonight, the St. Louis Cardinals start a 3-game series in Milwaukee vs the Brewers at 7:10 PM. The Cardinals are hoping to end a 3-game losing streak as they are 72-75 on the year. St. Louis is 4 games out of a playoff spot.
The Chicago Cubs are home taking on the Tampa Bay Rays today at 1:20 PM. It’s the 1st of a 3-game set in Chicago. The Cubs record is 83-63.
The Cincinnati Reds begin a 3-game series at the Athletics at 9:05 PM. The Reds are looking for a 3rd-straight victory as they are 74-72 on the season. Cincinnati is 1.5 games behind the New York Mets for the final playoff spot in the National League.
