Amazon says it’s in the early stages of deciding whether to develop a data center in Posey County. An Amazon spokesperson says that if the company moves forward, the project would go through a full public review process. The company says it plans to work with residents and local officials to understand community priorities and address concerns. The statement came as the Posey County Area Plan Commission held a public hearing on Thursday on proposed changes to the county’s unified development ordinance. Much of the public comment focused on new regulations for data center construction. Attorney Mike Schopmeyer, with Evansville law firm Kahn, Dees, Donovan and Kahn, represents Amazon Web Services. Schopmeyer told the commission Amazon is no longer considering its initial proposed location. He says the company is now looking at a more industrial site closer to major highways. Schopmeyer also said Amazon will not apply for permits or begin work until the county’s ordinance process is complete. He argued the proposed amendments are overly restrictive and need to be more balanced. Schopmeyer was limited to three minutes of public comment. An audience member’s attempt to give him additional time was not allowed under the commission’s rules. Schopmeyer said Amazon’s plans are still in the early stages, and community outreach could begin in about a month. The public hearing was continued until October 1st at 5:30 PM at Hovey House in Mt. Vernon.
The United Way of Southwestern Indiana is encouraging the community to “give like Dolly” this week. Today marks the inaugural Give Like Dolly Day — a global effort supporting local Dolly Parton Imagination Library programs and honoring the country music legend’s legacy of giving. Organizers say the day will shine a spotlight on the Imagination Library and help ensure children have access to free, high-quality books. If you’d like to donate, simply text “GiveLikeDolly” to 91999. Give Like Dolly Day will be celebrated each year on September 25th — a nod to Dolly Parton’s hit song, “9 to 5.”
The Kiwanis Club of Poseyville is kicking off its annual Autumnfest tonight. The three-day celebration features family activities, live music, food and community events throughout the weekend. This year’s festival celebrates 250 years of freedom. Things get underway this evening at 6:00 PM with the opening of the Bierstube. The weekend will also include inflatables, games, food vendors, a parade and fireworks. Live music will be featured throughout the festival, including a performance by Kenna Elpers on Saturday, with additional music planned for Sunday. Organizers are inviting families to come out and enjoy the festivities in Poseyville this weekend.
Indiana Department of Transportation officials say lane closures are set to begin next week on State Road 62 in Posey County. The closures will affect State Road 62 from the Indiana state line to Herman Island Road. INDOT says the closures are needed for work on the Wabash River Bridge. Crews will make bridge deck and truss repairs, along with painting the bridge. The project is expected to continue through January of 2028, depending on weather conditions. One lane of traffic will remain open through the work zone, with a temporary traffic signal controlling traffic. INDOT is reminding drivers to slow down, use extra caution, and avoid distractions when traveling through or near the construction zone.
The University of Evansville’s annual Chili Bowl Sale returns next week for its 24th year. The event gives community members a chance to purchase handcrafted ceramic bowls made by members of the U-E community. Most of the proceeds will support a local food agency working to fight hunger in the Evansville area. The event is part of the Empty Bowls initiative — a grassroots effort involving artists and craftspeople around the world to raise money for organizations fighting hunger. A small bowl costs 15 dollars, with other bowls available for between 20 and 100 dollars. Each purchase also comes with a complimentary serving of chili. Organizers encourage attendees to buy a bowl, enjoy some chili and spend time with friends. The Chili Bowl Sale is Thursday, October 1st, from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM on the East Terrace Lawn near Ridgway University Center.
Tonight is Week 6 of the High School Football season and the North Posey Vikings travel to South Spencer to face the Rebels at 7:00 PM. The Vikings are 5-0 and ranked 8th in Class 2A in this week’s Indiana Football Coaches Association poll. The Rebels have won back-to-back games and are 2-3. Mt. Vernon Football is also on the road this evening as they battle the Southridge Raiders at 7:00 PM. The Wildcats are 1-4 on the season after they picked up their first victory of the year last week at home vs Princeton. The Raiders are also 1-4 and looking to end a three-game losing streak. From Major League Baseball on Thursday, the St. Louis Cardinals lost the series finale in Pittsburgh to the Pirates, 2-1. Alec Burleson hit his 24th home run for the lone St. Louis run. The Cardinals are 77-82 and being their final three-game series of the season tonight at the Milwaukee Brewers at 6:40 PM.
The Chicago Cubs clinched a spot in the playoffs with a 2-1 win at home vs the Miami Marlins. Seiya Suzuki belted his 26th home run for the Cubs, who improve to 88-71. They are in Boston for a doubleheader today at 12:05 PM and 5:05 PM, as they close the regular season at the Red Sox. The Cubs, while they have clinched a playoff spot, are still battling the Padres and Phillies for home field advantage in the wild card round.
The Chicago White Sox also clinched a playoff berth, thanks to a 9-1 rout of the Royals in Kansas City. The White Sox scored three runs in both the first and second inning to break the game open early. They are 82-77 on the season and one game behind the Cleveland Guardians for first place in the American League Central Division. The White Sox will be the #2 seed in the playoffs, if they can catch the Guardians for the division. They will be the #6 seed if they stay as a wild card team. The White Sox are at home for their final three-game series this evening vs the Colorado Rockies at 6:40 PM.
The Cincinnati Reds outlasted the Atlanta Braves on the road, 7-6. Elly De La Cruz crushed his 30th home run in the win for Cincinnati. The Reds took 2-of-3 in the series and are 74-85 overall. They close their season with a three-game series that begins tonight in Toronto vs the Blue Jays at 6:07 PM.
In College Football this evening, the #5 Indiana Hoosiers start Big 10 play at home vs Northwestern at 7:00 PM. The Hoosiers are 3-0 and the Wildcats are 2-0.
