Police say a Mount Vernon man is facing multiple felony charges after a traffic stop turned into a brief chase in Evansville. It happened just after midnight back on October 26th. Officers say they saw a Lincoln sedan run a red light at Riverside Drive and Kentucky Avenue. When police attempted a traffic stop, the driver refused to pull over, even after emergency lights were activated. Police identify the driver as 26-year-old Blake A. Weinzapfel. During the chase, one officer says Weinzapfel nearly struck a police cruiser. The vehicle was later found abandoned and still running at Bedford and Jefferson Avenue. Officers say the car had struck and knocked over a portable basketball goal. Surveillance video from a nearby home reportedly shows Weinzapfel jumping out of the moving vehicle and running away, creating what police call a substantial risk to others. A warrant was issued, and Weinzapfel was arrested late Friday morning. He’s being held without bond and faces charges including interfering with law enforcement, resisting law enforcement, criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, leaving the scene of a crash, and reckless driving.

The University of Southern Indiana is rolling out a new mobile app aimed at improving safety on campus. Officials say the new app, called Screagle Watch, includes upgraded safety features like an Emergency Help red button and a tool called “Friend Walk.” That feature allows students to share their location in real time, so friends can follow along as they walk across campus. USI Public Safety says the app is also available to the public, not just students and staff. Officials say campus safety is their top priority, and they believe the new app will help keep USI a safe place to learn, work, and live.
