News:

There have been a few more details reported about the small earthquake that the Tri-State experienced on Friday. According to the United States Geological Survey, a magnitude 2.6 earthquake hit about 10:06 PM on Friday near Cynthiana. The epicenter of the quake is reported to be 18.8 kilometers down, or about 11.6 miles. 57 responses were made to the USGS of people being able to feel the earthquake, with some stretching down South towards Evansville, and as far East as Warrick County. The Tri-State is in the Illinois basin - Ozark dome region, which borders the New Madrid seismic zone. The region covers parts of Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois, Missouri, and Arkansas and stretches from Indianapolis and St. Louis to Memphis. USGS says moderately frequent earthquakes occur at irregular intervals throughout the region. The largest historical earthquake in the region was a magnitude 5.4 which damaged southern Illinois in 1968. Moderately damaging earthquakes strike somewhere in the region each decade or two, and smaller earthquakes are felt about once or twice a year. Officials say even though earthquakes in this area are less frequent than out west, they are typically felt over a much broader region.
