The Mt. Vernon Police Department announced they will be increasing patrols as part of ‘Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over’ campaign. The police department began increasing their patrols and doing sobriety checkpoints this past Saturday and will continue them through August 30th. They are encouraging drivers to make transportation plans before drinking. If you see a suspected drunk driver on the road, contact local law enforcement.

 

Posey County Emergency Management says that Marathon Petroleum has awarded them a $5,000 grant. They say this grant will be used for siren updates and maintenance. Posey County Emergency Management also wanted to give a big thank you to EMA Administrative Assistant, Jamie Kincade for the time and effort in completing the grant application.

 

Yesterday, the Fall Semester officially began at the University of Southern Indiana as it was the first day of classes for the Screaming Eagles. There were different vendors set up across campus to offer directions and information about organizations and activities. Campus leaders also handed out free ice cream to welcome students back. Over at the University of Evansville, their first day of class is tomorrow.

 

Week 1 of the High School Football season is this Friday and yesterday the USA Today Network Indiana Football Preseason Rankings were released. In Class 5A, Castle is 11th. In Class 4A, Heritage Hills is 2nd and Reitz is 7th. Class 3A has Memorial 1st, Gibson Southern 3rd, Mater Dei 6th, and Southridge 15th. In Class 2A, North Posey is 19th and in Class 1A, Forest Park is 18th.

 

Last night in local high school sports…North Posey Volleyball won their season opening match at home vs Gibson Southern in straight sets.

 

Tonight, in local high school sports…Mt. Vernon Volleyball plays at Evansville Christian. The JV match starts at 5:30 PM and the Varsity match will be after at 7:00 PM.

Mt. Vernon Boys and Girls Cross Country runs at Princeton at 5:00 PM.

Wildcats Girls Golf hosts a match at Western Hills Country Club at 4:15 PM against Central and Tecumseh.

North Posey Girls Soccer is on the road at Harrison at 5:00 PM.

North Posey Boys Tennis takes on Evansville Christian on the road at 4:00 PM.

 

In Major League Baseball from Monday…the St. Louis Cardinals ended a 5-game losing streak as they won the opening game of their 3-game series at the Miami Marlins, 8-3. The Cardinals improve to 62-64 on the year. Game 2 of the series is tonight at 5:40 PM.

The Chicago Cubs got shutout in their series opener at home with the Milwaukee Brewers, 7-0. Game 2 of the doubleheader got postponed due to weather. They will try the doubleheader again today in Chicago at 1:20 PM and 7:05 PM. The Cubs are 70-54.

The Cincinnati Reds won out west in Los Angeles as they beat the Angels, 4-1. The Reds record is 66-60 and they continue their series at the Angels this evening at 8:38 PM.
