Health officials are urging people to take extra precautions this holiday season as respiratory illnesses continue to spread. Every year more than 180,000 people die from viruses like RSV, COVID-19, and the flu and doctors say cases often spike during the holidays. At Deaconess, flu cases jumped more than 250 percent during the week of December 8th, and numbers have continued to rise since then. Doctors say if you’re feeling sick, it’s best to stay home. If you have symptoms, you’re likely contagious and gathering with others could put older adults, young children, and people with weakened immune systems at risk. Officials also say prevention starts with simple steps like dressing warmly in cold weather and practicing good handwashing, especially before eating or after coughing or sneezing. Those small steps, doctors say, can make a big difference this season.
