This week is going to be a big week for the Salvation Army of Evansville. The organization announced that on December 11th-13th, all donations made locally will be doubled up to $15,000, thanks to a matching gift from a local supporter. This includes Red Kettles in Vanderburgh, Warrick and Posey counties. Organizers say last year, the Salvation Army of Evansville provided over 226,000 meals and ensured almost 5,000 nights of safe lodging to households that needed help.

 

The University of Evansville has been awarded a $35,000 grant from the William E. Schmidt Foundation, furthering a partnership that has bolstered its music and opera programs for more than 20 years. The foundation has supported UE's music programs since 1998 and its opera program since 2006. This latest grant will aid in funding opera productions, community outreach, and scholarships within the UE Music Conservatory. The grant will help the program continue its excellence and expand its community impact. UE's opera program provides performance opportunities and professional training, ensuring it remains a regional leader in developing future vocal artists.

 

University of Evansville senior Connor Turnbull earned the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week award after a standout performance against Western Kentucky. Turnbull set a school record with nine blocks in Saturday's game, surpassing the previous mark of eight set by Egidijus Mockevicius in 2014. This achievement marked the highest block total in the Missouri Valley Conference since 2013 and the second highest in an NCAA game this season. He also came close to a triple-double, contributing 17 points and eight rebounds. In Wednesday's game against Ball State, Turnbull secured a double-double with 21 points and 10 rebounds, alongside five blocks in just over 29 minutes. Over the past week, Turnbull averaged 20 points, nine rebounds, and seven blocks per game. His recent performances have elevated him to sixth place in the NCAA for total blocks and blocks per game.

 

Coming up this Friday and Saturday in Mt. Vernon is Christmas on Main Street. On Friday, the parade starts at 7:00 PM and the tree lighting follows immediately after at City Hall. On Saturday, there are visits with Santa from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM and the Ice Rink is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. There are also many other fun activities throughout the day on Saturday. 

 

Last night in local high school sports…North Posey Girls Basketball won at home vs Southridge, 57-30. The Vikings improve to 7-1 and they are at Washington on Thursday.

Tonight, in local high school sports…Mt. Vernon Girls Basketball has a game at Princeton. The JV game is at 5:30 PM and the Varsity game begins around 6:30 PM. The Wildcats are 4-5 on the season.

 

This evening in Men’s College Basketball…the Indiana Hoosiers have a home conference game as they welcome Penn State for a 7:30 PM tipoff. IU looks to avoid a third-straight loss as they are 7-2 overall and 0-1 in the Big 10.

Kentucky has a home non-conference game against NC Central at 6:00 PM. The Cats are now unranked after losing back-to-back games and three of their last five games. UK is 5-4 on the year.

#13 Illinois battles Ohio State on the road in a conference contest at 6:30 PM. The Fighting Illini are 7-2.

 

From the NBA Monday night…the Indiana Pacers won at home over the Sacramento Kings, 116-105. Three Pacers scored over 20 points, led by Andrew Nembhard with 28 points and 12 assists. Bennedict Mathurin added 25 points and Pascal Siakam chipped in with 23 points. Indiana is 6-18 on the season and the Pacers are off until Friday when they play at the Philadelphia 76ers.
