For the first time in program history, Indiana Football is national champs. The Hoosiers completed a perfect season with a 16-0 record as they defeated the Miami Hurricanes last night in the College Football National Championship Game, 27-21. Indiana’s Jamarie Sharpe had the game sealing interception with less than a minute left. IU Quarterback, Fernando Mendoza went 16-for-27 passing for 186 yards and had a rushing touchdown.

 

The University of Southern Indiana celebrated Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a luncheon yesterday. Dr. Sheila Huff, former Director of Strategic Engagements for the EVSC, was the keynote speaker for the event. In her address, Dr. Huff spoke about three of the most important things Dr. King stood for; his family, faith, and all of humanity. She said looking back at the life Dr. King lived can help us move forward in a more united way. Officials say the annual celebration is one of USI’s signature events and draws a large audience from campus and the surrounding community. Evansville city leaders, along with USI students and faculty, were in attendance, living up to the MLK day phrase: “day on, not a day off.”

 

Last night, Mt. Vernon Boys Basketball began play in the Carmi White County Tournament and the Wildcats extended their winning streak to four games. They took care of Carmi, 59-41. Mt. Vernon improves to 8-5 overall and their next game is tomorrow evening vs Harrisburg at 5:30 PM over in the Carmi White County Tournament.

 

Tonight, North Posey Girls Basketball has a game at Princeton. The JV game starts at 5:30 PM and the Varsity game is at 7:00 PM. The Vikings have won four of their last five games and are 12-8 on the season. You can listen to tonight’s game on 98.9 FM WPIW and online at poseycountyradio.com.

 

This evening in local college sports, Evansville Men’s Basketball has a road conference game at Illinois-Chicago at 7:00 PM. The Purple Aces are 5-14 on the year and 1-7 in the Missouri Valley Conference.

Indiana Men’s Basketball has a tough assignment tonight as they are at #3 Michigan for a Big 10 battle at 6:00 PM. The Hoosiers have lost three-straight games and are 12-6 overall and 3-4 in conference play.

#4 Purdue is out west for a conference game at UCLA at 9:00 PM. The Boilermakers are going for their 10th-straight win as they are 17-1 and 7-0 in the Big 10.

 

From the NBA on Monday, the Indiana Pacers fell in Philadelphia to the 76ers, 113-104. Andrew Nembhard was Indiana’s leading scorer with 25 points. The Pacers are 10-34 overall. They continue their five-game road trip at the Boston Celtics tomorrow night.
