The Lilly Endowment has given the University of Evansville $500,000 as part of the Indiana Youth Programs on Campus. Officials with UE say this will allow the university to expand its high-impact youth programming, empowering local students to imagine, prepare for, and pursue college and career success from an early age. This new grant builds on the $1 million UE received during IYPC’s inaugural funding round in 2022. University officials say more than 1,214 elementary through high school students have participated in summer camps, school visits, and after-school programming since the start of the program. UE says youth programs have grown rapidly over the past three years, with participation rising from 118 in 2022 to 295 in 2024.

The dangerous heatwave is expected to last for much of the week, with a Heat Advisory remaining in effect for our region through Friday. Dangerously high heat index values will continue from now into the weekend, topping 100 degrees every afternoon. While the afternoons and early evenings might see some isolated thunderstorms, these will offer little relief from the oppressive heat. Currently, a strong high-pressure system is dominating the region, contributing to this extended period of extreme heat. This pattern is expected to persist through midweek before gradually weakening by the end of the week.

Evansville city officials say due to the extreme heat this week, there are multiple cooling centers available for the public to use. According to city officials, the C.K. Newsome Center will open as a cooling center during business hours all week. They say all EVPL locations are also available for people to come in and cool off during their business hours.
