The University of Southern Indiana is hosting a conference this week focused on better understanding and supporting autistic individuals who have limited or unreliable speech. The university’s Disability Resources Office is partnering with Optimal ACCESS, Incorporated, to present “Rethinking Autism 2026: Synchronizing Connection, Regulation and Communication for Learning.” The two-day conference will be held this Thursday and Friday in Carter Hall inside University Center West on the USI campus. Organizers say the program will focus on the experiences of autistic individuals who are non-speaking, minimally speaking, or unreliably speaking. The event aims to encourage a shift in how autism is understood—through what organizers describe as a neuromotor and neurodiversity-affirming perspective, rather than approaches that focus primarily on compliance. The conference is open to a wide range of participants, including self-advocates, caregivers, educators and healthcare professionals. Organizers are also encouraging school administrators and other decision-makers to attend, with the goal of discussing broader system changes and long-term support models. Registration is required to attend the conference.

The camp schedule kicks off on June 1st with ceramics for grades 9-12 and continues with various programs until July 30th. Some of the programs include music camp, STEM camp, art camp, printmaking, PRIDE camp, Esports camp, and many others. You can view the list of camps and dates at Evansville.edu/camps. There you can also find additional details, including costs and age requirements. Registration is now open and space is limited. Early registration is encouraged. Financial assistance is available for families who qualify.

Traffic alert for Posey County drivers as this past weekend, INDOT crews began lane closures on the east and westbound passing lanes of I-64 near Poseyville. These lane closures are between mile marker 9 and mile marker 13. Lane closures allow for crossover construction. This crossover is being constructed for a future bridge project in the area. Work on the crossover is expected to last through the beginning of May. The driving lanes in both directions will remain open during this project. INDOT reminds drivers to slow down and use extra caution when traveling in work zones.
