News:
Law enforcement agencies worked together to stop an attempted ATM theft in Posey County. At around 2:22 AM on Monday, deputies responded to an alarm at Crane Credit Union on St. Wendel-Cynthiana Road. While on the way, Posey County authorities called in reinforcements requesting a K-9 unit from the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office and drone support from the Evansville Police Department. That drone quickly spotted a person hiding in the nearby woods. A K-9 unit was deployed, and the suspect, later identified as 21-year-old Marcos Daniel Rodriguez Sanchez, was apprehended. Authorities say Sanchez, a Venezuelan national living in Chicago without legal immigration status, was treated for minor injuries before being booked into the Posey County Jail on theft charges. He’s being held without bond. Deputies also stopped a suspicious vehicle leaving the area. Inside were two other men that were also Venezuelan nationals living in Chicago illegally. Evidence in the car linked them to the attempted theft, and both were arrested and charged with theft. They, too, are being held without bond. Crane Credit Union confirmed that no customer data was compromised in the incident.
Big news for students at the University of Southern Indiana as the USI Foundation is set to receive a $1 million grant from Good Samaritan Home to help expand opportunities for future social workers. The generous gift will launch the new University of Southern Indiana–Good Samaritan Internship Program, aimed at increasing access to paid internships for students enrolled in USI's Social Work programs. The College of Liberal Arts and the Social Work Program will oversee the initiative, including setting its long-term goals. Part of the funding will also support a clinical faculty position for the next five years. Andrea Gentry, president of the USI Foundation, says the hope is to give students more hands-on, paid experiences while also strengthening the services they provide to local communities. Officials believe the program will help tackle the ongoing shortage of social workers in southwestern Indiana.
