Indiana Department of Transportation officials say lane closures are set to begin next week on State Road 62 in Posey County. The closures will affect State Road 62 from the Indiana state line to Herman Island Road. INDOT says the closures are needed for work on the Wabash River Bridge. Crews will make bridge deck and truss repairs, along with painting the bridge. The project is expected to continue through January of 2028, depending on weather conditions. One lane of traffic will remain open through the work zone, with a temporary traffic signal controlling traffic. INDOT is reminding drivers to slow down, use extra caution, and avoid distractions when traveling through or near the construction zone.
The Mount Vernon Police Department is looking to add to its force. The department is now accepting applications for police patrolman positions, with a starting salary of $66,281. The department says officers are eligible for longevity pay of $663 per year, up to 20 years, along with paid vacation, personal and sick days, double pay on holidays and a $20,000 life insurance policy at no cost. Additional benefits include overtime opportunities, shift differential pay, department equipment and vehicles, a take-home vehicle, and eight-hour shifts. Indiana students looking to attend the University of Southern Indiana can apply for free this week. USI is waiving undergraduate admission application fees for Indiana students through Friday as part of the Indiana Commission for Higher Education’s annual College GO! campaign. The campaign provides resources to help students, counselors and teachers plan for education after high school. To receive the fee waiver, students must apply online at www.usi.edu/apply by midnight this Friday. Applicants should use the promo code “College GO 27.” University officials say students who apply will also automatically be considered for merit-based scholarships.
The Kiwanis Club of Poseyville is hosting its annual Poseyville Autumnfest this weekend, featuring three days of family activities, live music and community events. This year’s festival will celebrate 250 years of freedom, with a Bierstube opening Friday night at 6:00 PM, followed by inflatables, games, food vendors, a parade and fireworks throughout the weekend. Live music will include Kenna Elpers on Saturday, with additional music on Sunday.
Last night in local high school sports, North Posey Boys Tennis won vs Reitz, 3-2. The Vikings improve to 11-5 and 8-2 PAC.
Tonight, in local high school sports, North Posey Volleyball takes on Southridge on the road. JV match begins at 5:00 PM and the Varsity match is around 6:30 PM.
North Posey Boys Soccer is at home vs Mt. Vernon at 5:00 PM.
North Posey Girls Soccer welcomes Pike Central at 7:00 PM.
North Posey Cross Country runs in a meet vs Gibson Southern and Princeton at 5:00 PM.
North Posey Boys Tennis travels to Heritage Hills at 4:30 PM.
Mt. Vernon Volleyball hits the road to battle Bosse. JV match starts at 5:30 PM and the Varsity match follows around 7:00 PM.
In Major League Baseball tonight, the St. Louis Cardinals begin a 3-game series at the Pittsburgh Pirates at 5:40 PM. The Cardinals are 76-80.
The Chicago Cubs are at home this evening as they start a 3-game series vs the Miami Marlins at 6:40 PM. The Cubs are 87-69 overall and are tied with the San Diego Padres for the top National League Wild Card position.
The Chicago White Sox continue to battle for a division championship as they get a 3-game series underway at the Kansas City Royals at 6:40 PM. The White Sox are 80-76 and sit one game behind the Cleveland Guardians for first place in the American League Central. They currently have the final American League Wild Card spot.
The Cincinnati Reds play the opening game of their 3-game set at the Atlanta Braves at 6:15 PM. The Reds are 72-84 on the season.
