North Posey High School has named Jeff Embrey as their new Boys Basketball Head Coach. It was approved at last night’s school board meeting. Embrey is a 1981 Mt. Vernon High School Graduate and was a multi-sport standout in Basketball and Baseball as he helped the Wildcats win five sectional titles across both sports. He also played two years at the University of Evansville for coach Dick Walters and was a member of the 1982 NCAA Tournament team. Embrey would later transfer to USI. His coaching resume stretches back nearly four decades, and he has coached multiple sports at schools in Indiana and Kentucky. Embrey won four sectional championships and a regional in 1999 at Austin High School. He led his teams in Kentucky to nine district championships and 17 regional appearances. He notably won 181 games in 12 seasons at Lyon County, before stepping down in 2019 as the program’s all-time leader in victories. Embry was most recently a Junior High Basketball Coach and a Varsity Baseball Assistant at Mt. Vernon. He replaces Rusty Seymour who went 71-44 across five seasons with the Vikings. North Posey Boys Basketball went 12-12 last season. They haven’t won a sectional championship since 1966 but have played in the sectional championship game in 3 of the last 5 years.
Mt. Vernon High School is having their Free Physical Night this evening at 5:00 PM in the Mt. Vernon High School Athletic Foyer. It’s for those who want to participate in athletics during the 2025-2026 school year and are currently in 6th-11th grade.
Officials with the United States Postal Service say they are looking to fill several openings across Indiana. Several job fairs are set for Thursday May 22nd from 10:00 AM until 2:00 PM. Officials say it’s an opportunity for job seekers to ask questions. They say the positions pay up to $20.38 per hour, plus benefits. There is job fairs set for several towns, including Poseyville at 41 S. Locust Street, Oakland City at 130 West Harrison Street, and Owensville at 100 South Mill Street.
Posey County Council on Aging is having their Spring Fling this Saturday, May 17th. It will be from 11:00 AM – 2:00 PM at 611 West 8th Street in Mt. Vernon. There will be lots of crafts, homemade jewelry, homemade desserts, and popcorn.
Mt. Vernon Market Nights wants to remind the community that in just a few short weeks, they will be kicking off their Monday Market Nights. Soon, the Mt. Vernon Riverfront Park will be bursting with delicious food, shopping from handmade vendors, live music, and community gatherings. The first Mt. Vernon Market Night is June 2nd from 4:30-7:30 PM.
Coming up this Sunday at Hagemann Park in Mt. Vernon is the grand opening of Avery’s Place Playground. The community is invited to celebrate the opening of the first all-inclusive playground in Posey County. Festivities begin at 1:00 PM. Come enjoy ice cream, snacks, live music, and more. Hagemann Park is located at 1301 Country Club Road in Mt. Vernon.
Last night in local high school sports…North Posey Baseball won at home against Forest Park, 4-1. The Vikings improve to 15-7 on the season.
North Posey Softball took care of Pike Central on the road, 12-6 to improve to 15-4 overall.
Mt. Vernon Baseball won their 3rd-straight game at Tecumseh, 7-1. The Wildcats are now 4-12.
Mt. Vernon Softball defeated Princeton at home, 3-1. Their record sits at 4-5.
From local college sports Tuesday evening…Evansville Baseball beat USI on the road, 18-8. The Purple Aces and Screaming Eagles split the 4 games they played this season.
In the NBA Playoffs last night…the Indiana Pacers advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals as they beat the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 5 on the road, 114-105. Tyrese Haliburton led Indiana with 31 points. The Pacers won the Second Round Series, 4-1. Indiana is playing in the Eastern Conference Finals for a second-straight year. The Pacers await the winner of the Boston Celtics and New York Knicks series.
From Major League Baseball on Tuesday…the St. Louis Cardinals had Game 2 of the series in Philadelphia with the Phillies postponed due to rain. The two teams will play a split doubleheader today to conclude the 3-game set. The first game is at 12:05 PM and then the second game will be at 5:15 PM. The Cardinals have won 9-straight games and are 23-19 on the season.
The Chicago Cubs scored 3 runs in the 9th inning and walked off the Miami Marlins, 5-4. The Cubs improve to 25-18. Chicago goes for the 3-game sweep tonight at 6:40 PM.
The Cincinnati Reds fell in the opening game of their series at home with the Chicago White Sox, 5-1 in 10 innings. The Reds drop to 20-23. Their series continues this evening at 6:15 PM.
