Last night at the MSD of Mt. Vernon School Board meeting, Doug Novsek was named the new Mt. Vernon Boys Basketball Head Coach. Novsek has been a long-time college assistant coach and spent the past two seasons on Stan Gourard’s staff at the University of Southern Indiana. The Lawrenceville, Ill., native brings over 30 years of experience at the college level. Among his stops are Indiana State, Southwest Texas State, Illinois, Nebraska, Nevada, Evansville, Southern Illinois, Idaho and Eastern Illinois. Novsek was the associate head coach at the latter for coach Marty Simmons. He was on staff with the Purple Aces from 2015-18. Novsek played collegiately at Southern Illinois and was a two-year captain for coach Rich Herrin. He ranks 91st in Illinois high school basketball history with 2,193 career points and was second runner-up for Illinois Mr. Basketball as a senior at Lawrenceville. The school also approved the hire of Robin Duncan as an assistant coach. The 2018 Harrison grad played at Vermont before a professional career in Europe. Novsek replaces Joe Newcomb who left for the Springs Valley Head Coaching position a few weeks ago, after spending six seasons as the head coach of the Wildcats.

 

We still have plenty of time before the Fourth of July is here, but the city of Mt. Vernon announced that this year’s fireworks display will be held on Sunday, July 6th at the riverfront. There will be music by Annabelle Whitledge from 7:00-9:00 PM on the stage and food booths on site beginning at 5:00 PM.

 

Coming up tonight in local high school sports…Mt. Vernon Baseball heads to Pike Central at 5:30 PM and North Posey Softball plays at South Spencer at 5:00 PM. Both games were supposed to be played last night but were postponed due to rain.

 

Tonight, in the NBA Playoffs…the Indiana Pacers begin their Eastern Conference Finals series at the New York Knicks at 7:00 PM. It is a best-of-seven series with the winner advancing to the NBA Finals against the winner of the Minnesota Timberwolves and Oklahoma City Thunder series in the Western Conference. The Pacers have made it to the Eastern Conference Finals back-to-back years and it’s their 5th trip since 2000. Indiana hasn’t made it to the NBA Finals since 2000 and has never won an NBA title.

 

From Major League Baseball on Tuesday…the St. Louis Cardinals suffered a 5-4 loss at home against the Detroit Tigers. The Cardinals are now 27-22 overall and will finish up their 3-game set with the Tigers today at 12:15 PM. The two teams have split the first two games of their series.

The Chicago Cubs carved up the Marlins in Miami, 14-1. The Cubs improve to 29-20 on the year and the two teams play the rubber game of their 3-game series this afternoon at 12:10 PM.

The Cincinnati Reds lost a pitcher’s duel with the Pirates in Pittsburgh, 1-0. The Reds are back to .500 at 25-25. Their 3-game series wraps up today with rubber game at 11:35 AM.
