Mt. Vernon Boys Basketball Head Coach, Joe Newcome has resigned. Coach Newcomb spent the past six seasons as the head coach of the Wildcats and finished with a 58-90 record. Newcome has accepted another position that will become official next week. The Wildcats had double-digit win totals in four of his six seasons, including records of 14-12 and 13-13 the last two years. This past season, Mt. Vernon lost to Memorial in the sectional semifinal and will return six of their top seven scorers. There are now three boys’ basketball programs in the Pocket Athletic Conference that are currently without a head coach: Heritage Hills, North Posey, and Mt. Vernon.

 

The Indiana High School Athletic Association has approved Girls Flag Football as an “emerging sport,” with 65 schools committed to fielding a team in 2025. The IHSAA formally voted to move it into the new status Monday afternoon. This means the sport has made its first steps toward becoming a fully sanctioned high school sport in Indiana. The Colts have made efforts to develop girls flag football further in the state. These efforts include the creation of the Colts Girls High School Flag Football League in 2023 with eight teams. The league was further expanded in 2024 to 27 teams. Officials say to become eligible as a sanctioned sport, 100 schools must compete while in emerging sport status.

 

North Posey Athletics is having their Athletic Physicals this Saturday from 8:00 AM until 11:30 AM at North Posey High School. The cost is 10 dollars. The physicals are for all incoming 7th-12th grade students planning on participating in athletics at North Posey for the 2025-2026 school year.

 

The Posey County Health Department has announced that they are partnering and hosting the non-profit Building Block to help parents find quality childcare. For those that are interested, they should plan to attend on May 19th from 9:00 AM until 12:00 PM at their office, which is located at 100 Vista Drive.

 

Last night in local high school sports…North Posey Baseball beat Mt. Vernon on the road, 7-1. Vikings Baseball improves to 11-5 overall and Wildcats Baseball drops to 1-12.

North Posey Softball earned a 3-1 win at Mt. Carmal. Vikings Softball runs their record to 11-4.

Mt. Vernon Softball got beat at home by Heritage Hills, 10-0. Wildcats Softball slides to 3-5 on the year.

 

Coming up this evening in local high school sports…North Posey Baseball welcomes Central at 6:00 PM.

North Posey Softball plays at Southridge at 5:30 PM.

 

On Tuesday night in the NBA Playoffs…the Indiana Pacers pulled off another miraculous comeback in Game 2 of their Second Round Series as the edged the Cavaliers in Cleveland, 120-119. Indiana trailed by 7 points with 48 seconds left and won a 3-point shot from Tyrese Haliburton with 1 second left. Haliburton had 19 points in the game. The Pacers were led by Aaron Nesmith and Myles Turner who had 23 points apiece. The Pacers now lead the best-of-seven series, 2-0 as the series shifts back to Indiana for Game 3 Friday night.

 

From Major League Baseball on Tuesday…the St. Louis Cardinals won their 4th-straight game as they topped the Pittsburgh Pirates at home, 2-1. The Cardinals improve to 18-19 on the season. They go for the 3-game sweep today in St. Louis at 12:15 PM.

The Chicago Cubs lost 14-5 in 10 innings at home to the San Francisco Giants. Those two teams wrap up their 3-game set in Chicago this afternoon at 1:20 PM.

The Cincinnati Reds dropped their 4th-straight game in Atlanta to the Braves, 2-1 in 10 innings. Cincinnati tumbles to 18-19. Their 4-game series in Atlanta continues tonight at 6:15 PM.
