The Posey County Sheriff’s Office has revealed new findings from a toxicology report of 19-year-old Parker Payne, of Cynthiana. Payne passed away in a crash on the morning of November 21st, 2025, in the 9000 block of State Road 65. The sheriff’s office says they initially suspected that alcohol may have played a factor in his death. However, Sheriff Tom Latham says what they discovered later would disprove this. The toxicology report showed Payne had no alcohol or any intoxicants in his system. Sheriff Latham stated, “I apologized to the family for the inaccurate premature information released.” The Evansville Police Department also assisted in traffic reconstruction of this investigation.
Indiana Department of Transportation officials say crews will begin alternating lane closures this week on State Road 62 near Mt. Vernon. According to officials, the lane closures will take place between Gun Club Road and Caborn Road. Crews say one lane will remain open during these alternating lane closures. Work is expected to begin tomorrow and take three days to complete, depending on the weather. INDOT reminds drivers to slow down, use extra caution and avoid distractions when traveling in and near work zones.
Recapping local high school sports from over the weekend, Mt. Vernon Boys Basketball won their game on Friday at home vs Forest Park. It took double overtime for the Wildcats to defeat the Rangers, 68-65. Mt. Vernon is now over .500 as they improve to 6-5 on the season. They play again this Friday at Southridge. North Posey Boys Basketball did not have a game this past weekend. They have a pair of games coming up this weekend. The Vikings are home vs Tecumseh on Friday and then at Forest Park on Saturday. North Posey is 2-8 on the year.
Mt. Vernon Girls Basketball lost on Saturday at Heritage Hills, 68-23. They are 7-12 overall and have a home game tomorrow evening with Carmi.

In local college sports this past weekend, Evansville Men’s Basketball ended an eight-game losing streak on Saturday. They won at Indiana State, 72-69. Leif Moeller and AJ Casey each scored 17 points. Moeller also had 8 rebounds and 8 assists. The Purple Aces improve to 5-13 and 1-6 in the Missouri Valley Conference. UE is home tomorrow night as they welcome Bradley at 7:00 PM.
USI Men’s Basketball lost at home to UT Martin on Saturday evening, 73-56. The losing streak has now reached eight games for the Screaming Eagles, as they are 3-13 on the season and 0-6 in the Ohio Valley Conference. Amaree Brown led USI in scoring off of the bench with 17 points.
USI Women’s Basketball continues to play well as they defeated UT Martin at home on Saturday, 52-43. Shannon Blacher was the leading scorer for USI as she had 20 points. Sophia Loden collected a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Screaming Eagles Women’s Basketball runs their record to 11-4 and 5-1 in the OVC. Both USI Women’s and Men’s Basketball play at Tennessee Tech on Thursday.
Evansville Women’s Basketball could not win their third-straight game yesterday as they lost at Illinois State, 82-71. Camryn Runner led UE in scoring with 17 points. The Purple Aces are 4-12 on the year and 2-3 in the Missouri Valley Conference. Their next game is on Friday at home against Illinois-Chicago.
From the NBA tonight, the Indiana Pacers continue their four-game homestand as they welcome the Boston Celtics at 6:30 PM. The Pacers are looking for their first three-game winning streak of the year as they are 8-31 on the season.
