News:

Mt. Vernon High School has announced the hiring of Brad Higginson as the next Head Football Coach. Higginson brings nearly two decades of coaching experience and deep roots in Posey County to the program. He is a native of Poseyville and graduate of North Posey High School. His playing career took him to Kentucky Wesleyan College, where he was a four-year starter at free safety and earned Division II Honorable Mention All-American honors. Higginson still holds places in the school’s record books for 21 tackles in a single game, 10 career interceptions, and 13 passes defended. While his accomplishments on the field are notable, it’s his coaching résumé that now brings him back home. Higginson began as a student assistant at Kentucky Wesleyan before serving as a graduate assistant at Gannon University. He then spent 12 years at Manchester University in multiple defensive roles, including Defensive Coordinator. Most recently, he coached at Cumberland University for three years as Special Teams Coordinator and Linebackers Coach. He has also gained high school experience with a stop at Chattanooga Christian School. Higginson says his mission is clear. “I want to give back to the game that brought so much to me as a person,” he said. “Through football, I want to change the lives of the young men I coach.” Mt. Vernon officials say they’re excited for the leadership, vision, and hometown pride Higginson brings as he begins this next chapter of Wildcat Football.

Mt. Vernon High School has also announced the hiring of Brent Renshaw as the new Head Boys Track and Field Coach. Renshaw most recently led both the boys and girls cross country programs this past fall. Now, he transitions into leading the boys track and field program, which is a sport deeply rooted in his own story. Renshaw’s journey in track began back in sixth grade, when he joined the sport with dreams of competing at the Hershey Nationals. What started as conditioning for other sports, quickly became a true passion. As a Wildcat, he was a four-year varsity athlete in both cross country and track and field. His accomplishments include four All-Conference honors in cross country, an individual state qualification, and was a part of a Semi-State Championship team. Renshaw was also part of the school record-holding 4-by-800 relay team that advanced to state competition. His competitive drive has continued beyond high school. In 2017, he placed in the top 35 in strength and conditioning at the Arnold Classic in Ohio. And this spring, he’s preparing for a new challenge, which is training for his first marathon. Renshaw says he believes track and field represent athletics in its purest form, where hard work, discipline, and belief directly translate into results. With a familiar face and a lifelong connection to the program, Mt. Vernon officials say they’re excited to see Renshaw now lead the next generation of Wildcats on the track.

The fire departments serving Black Township and the City of Mount Vernon have announced a new automatic aid agreement aimed at strengthening emergency response across the community. Under the agreement, which takes effect immediately, whenever either department is dispatched to a reported structure fire or fire alarm, the partnering department will automatically be sent as well. Depending on the nature of the call, that response could include an engine company or ladder truck arriving at the same time. Officials say the move will mean faster response times, more firefighters on scene sooner, and greater equipment availability during critical early moments of a fire. The added manpower and apparatus are expected to support a stronger initial fire attack and improved overall operations. Leaders from both departments call the agreement a proactive step that enhances firefighter and civilian safety while strengthening overall emergency response capabilities. They also note the improved level of service could positively impact the community’s ISO rating, which is a factor that can influence property insurance rates for homeowners and businesses. Officials say the partnership reflects a continued commitment to cooperation and public safety throughout Black Township and Mount Vernon.

Ivy Tech Community College Evansville has announced a new program and partnership aimed at strengthening healthcare services across Southwestern Indiana. The college is launching a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant program this summer in partnership with Deaconess Health System. The 10-week program begins May 26th and will be held at Deaconess’s Midtown Campus, giving students the opportunity for hands-on clinical experience in a real healthcare setting. Graduates of the program will be prepared to work in hospitals, clinics, and physicians’ offices, performing both clinical and administrative duties. College officials say the program may be free for qualifying students through Indiana’s Next Level Jobs Grant, helping remove financial barriers for those entering the healthcare field. Registration for both Summer and Fall classes is now open.
