A 19-year-old from Mount Vernon is facing charges after authorities say he attempted to hit another person with a vehicle earlier last summer. According to the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called June 4th to an incident in the parking lot of The Bauerhaus on Darmstadt Road. Investigators say the victim told a deputy he had been having problems throughout the day with 19-year-old Brody Maasberg. The victim said he returned to The Bauerhaus after completing a setup and saw Maasberg in the parking lot. The victim told authorities he went to the employee parking area to inform Maasberg that he had been terminated from his job. He says the two began arguing before Maasberg got into a vehicle. According to the report, the victim exited his own vehicle and approached Maasberg’s car from the rear. As he moved from the passenger side toward the driver’s side, the victim says Maasberg suddenly accelerated in reverse, forcing him to jump out of the way. Authorities say Maasberg then left the scene, with the victim following behind. Two days later, deputies attempted to schedule an interview with Maasberg. Investigators say he initially agreed but later called back and said he did not believe the meeting was “worth his time.” During a follow-up conversation on June 24th, the victim told deputies he had not had any further issues with Maasberg. Maasberg is now facing charges of battery by means of a deadly weapon and criminal recklessness.

Earlier this year, officials broke ground on Indiana’s first national security manufacturing campus in Bloomfield. It’s expected to bring thousands of jobs to the surrounding area. They say they want graduates to be able to take advantage of the economic growth in the state. The new center on campus will include new accounting and finance hubs, a biometric discovery lab and learning spaces. USI officials say construction for the center of applied business technologies should be complete by this summer.

Three people were arrested early Sunday morning following a reported fight at Burdette Park. According to the Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched around 4:21 AM on Sunday to a cabin at the park after a caller reported an assault in progress. While responding, deputies say they spotted a vehicle believed to be connected to the disturbance traveling along Broadway Avenue before pulling into a gas station in the 1400 block of Delmar Avenue. Deputies made contact with the occupants and detained Colin Minton and Kyle Fravel while the investigation continued. Additional deputies arrived at the cabin area and spoke with several people who had been attending a gathering. Witnesses told investigators an argument escalated into a physical fight, during which Minton allegedly struck and injured another person. Authorities also identified Shane Hendrix as another person involved in the incident. Deputies later located Hendrix and conducted a traffic stop on his vehicle. During an interview, the sheriff’s office says Hendrix admitted he had displayed a firearm during the altercation and later fired the gun into the air outside the cabin while others were nearby. While Hendrix was being processed at the jail, deputies say they found a folded dollar bill in his pocket containing about one gram of a white powdery substance that field-tested positive for cocaine. Investigators also searched a vehicle connected to Fravel after a K-9 alerted to the possible presence of narcotics. Deputies say they found two bags containing a green leafy substance under the driver’s seat, weighing about 7.3 grams and 1.4 grams. Both tested positive for THC. Minton, Fravel and Hendrix were all booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail. Authorities say the investigation is ongoing and additional arrests are possible.

Daylight Saving Time took place at 2:00 AM on Sunday and with everyone setting their clocks ahead one hour, it’s also a good reminder for some safety checks that you can do around the house today. Local fire officials say families should check their smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors and change the batteries in them. They say families should have smoke detectors inside bedrooms and just outside of sleeping areas. Fire officials also say that batteries should be checked every month and changed at least twice a year. They recommend replacing the smoke detectors themselves every ten years.
