Mount Vernon VS Corydon Central Sectional Game Recap 10-23-26

The Mount Vernon Wildcats ended a decade-long postseason drought Friday night, October 23, with a dominating 49-6 victory over Corydon Central in the opening round of the IHSAA football sectionals. The win marked Mount Vernon's first sectional victory since 2015 and sends the Wildcats into a second-round matchup with Evansville Mater Dei.

Mount Vernon wasted little time taking control. After stopping Corydon Central on its opening possession and blocking a punt, senior Eastin Hall broke free for a 20-yard touchdown run. Hall added a 19-yard scoring run later in the first quarter, and junior Saint Henderson followed with a 40-yard touchdown run to give the Wildcats a commanding 21-0 lead after one quarter.

The Wildcats continued rolling in the second quarter. Hall scored his third touchdown of the night on a one-yard run before senior quarterback Johnathon Crowe connected with junior Ryan Lilleston on a 34-yard touchdown pass. Mount Vernon carried a 35-0 advantage into halftime.

Henderson added a 20-yard touchdown run early in the third quarter to extend the lead to 42-0. Corydon Central finally got on the scoreboard when quarterback Bobby Sharp connected with Cole Simpson on a 34-yard touchdown pass. The Panthers' two-point conversion attempt failed.

Sophomore Paxton Boyd capped the scoring with a one-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter, giving Mount Vernon its final 49-6 margin. Sophomore kicker Wade York was perfect on all seven extra-point attempts.

Mount Vernon's rushing attack was nearly unstoppable, piling up 261 yards and six touchdowns on just 27 carries. Hall led the way with 128 yards and three touchdowns on 11 carries, while Henderson added 108 yards and two scores on just six attempts.

Crowe was equally impressive through the air, completing 10 of 11 passes for 118 yards and a touchdown. Lilleston was his favorite target, hauling in five receptions for 86 yards and a score.

The Wildcats finished with 379 yards of total offense on just 38 plays.

Defensively, Mount Vernon delivered one of its strongest performances of the season, limiting Corydon Central to just 125 total yards, including only 23 yards rushing on 13 attempts. Sharp completed seven of 16 passes, with Simpson catching three for 45 yards and a touchdown. JoJo McCarty added two receptions for 50 yards.

The victory sets up a second-round showdown with Evansville Mater Dei, which advanced with a 63-6 win over Princeton.

Mount Vernon will host Mater Dei next Friday, October 30, with kickoff expected at 7 p.m., pending confirmation.
