Traffic alert for anyone that travels Main Street, Walnut Street, and Givens Road in Mt. Vernon. There will be three railroad crossings that will be closed for construction this week. The crossings at Main Street and Walnut Street in Mt. Vernon will be closed today (Monday September 26th) through Thursday (September 29th) and will be set to reopen this Friday (September 30th). The crossing at Givens Road between Country Mark and GAF will be closed starting Tuesday and will stay closed through the weekend. It will reopen next Monday, October 3rd. Bus routes will be adjusted to avoid these areas. Expect delays in both the morning pick up and afternoon drop off this week.

 

The Posey County Sheriff’s Office says an incident at a North Posey football game led to a teenager’s arrest. The sheriff’s office posted about it on social media Saturday, a day after the incident happened. Before the football game Friday night, a 17-year-old allegedly was involved in an “altercation” on the south end of the field. Deputies say they arrested the teen for battery. According to officials, the teen was taken to the Youth Care Center in Evansville after the arrest. The Posey County Sheriff’s Office clarifies that there were no more incidents during, or after the game that required their assistance. Deputies have not released any further details on the altercation.

 

USI Public Safety officials are warning the campus of snakes in the area. Officials say baby copperhead snakes are born in September and October. Students and staff are told to be aware and on the lookout on trails and grassy areas. The school says copperheads are not aggressive, so they will leave you alone if you leave them alone.

 

Indiana’s College Appreciation Week starts today, and several Hoosier colleges and universities are kicking it off by waiving all application fees. The University of Southern Indiana joins five other schools participating during the week. Although some schools are waiving their fees, another 33 colleges have reported free applications year-round. College Application Week is part of Learn More Indiana’s annual College GO! initiative that takes place each August through November with information and resources designed to help Hoosier K-12 students explore and plan for education beyond high school. Indiana’s College Application Week runs September 26th through the 30th.
