Rescue crews were called to a car in the water at the Mt. Vernon riverfront. It happened before 10:30 AM today. Authorities say a tow truck slid down the hill trying to pull the car out. Officials say the truck and the car have been pulled out, and nobody was hurt. The scene is now clear.

 

Last night and early this morning, much of the area was under a Winter Storm Warning. Persistent sleet and freezing rain have made for slick traveling conditions. Due to the road conditions, MSD of Mt. Vernon, MSD of North Posey, and all EVSC Schools canceled school today. The University of Southern Indiana and University of Evansville also cancelled all their today. Some other Posey County closings for today includes the Children’s Learning Center, Posey County Council on Aging, St. Matthews Church Food Pantry, and Alexandrian Public Library.

 

Mt. Vernon High School is set to host the Girls Basketball Class 3A Sectional 32 this week. Tonight’s first round games have been postponed due to the road conditions. The first-round games will now be played tomorrow night. The semi-final round will still be Friday evening and the Championship on Saturday night. So, Mt. Vernon Girls Basketball will play Memorial tomorrow night at 5:30 PM. Then, Mater Dei and Boonville will follow at 7:00 PM.

 

North Posey Girls Basketball is set to play in the Class 2A Sectional 48 this week at Forest Park. Their first round game against Forest Park tonight as been postponed to tomorrow evening. The Lady Vikings will now play Forest Park tomorrow night at 7:00 PM.

 

The Evansville Police Department was called to Rick’s Sport’s Bar for a fight in progress early Monday morning. According to an affidavit, the caller told dispatch around 12 people were fighting. Police say when they arrived, a large crowd was out in the parking lot. While in the parking lot, police approached a man who told them he had nothing to do with the incident. According to police reports, that man was seen putting a jacket into a car and then leaving the scene while officers were still investigating. Police say they were told by someone else shots were fired inside of the bar. After reviewing video footage, police saw two women fighting, security splitting them up and then a man shoot into the ceiling. That man was later identified as the same person officers originally approached after arriving on scene, according to police. Police reports show that the car the jacket was placed into was searched and inside the pocket, officers found a handgun. The gun was like the one seen in the video footage. The man was found and identified as 42-year-old Tarone Johnson. Officers say Johnson admitted that he was at Rick’s Sports Bar and fired a shot into the ceiling when a fight broke out. He was arrested and booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail on the following charges: Criminal Recklessness with a Deadly Weapon, Unlawful Carrying of a Handgun, and False Reporting/Informing.
