News:

Education leaders in Posey County gathered yesterday morning to deliver the State of the Schools address. District officials used the event as a chance to discuss progress on school projects and programs aimed at bettering the education experience for local students. In the Metropolitan School District of Mt. Vernon, Superintendent Matt Thompson said that the district is working on a few big projects. One of those projects is a new indoor facility at Mt. Vernon High School that will be used for sports and other athletic groups in need of a meeting place. In addition to the new facility, Thompson says that the high school's gymnasium will receive some major renovations. Outside of those projects, the district is also providing students with more tools to prepare them for the future, Thompson says. That includes new programs where students can get hands-on experience in things like welding and automotive mechanics, and even a new program that will help students earn their CDL.

A North Posey Business teacher was announced as Teacher of the Year during their State of the Schools. Officials say Matthew Winegar, who works at North Posey Junior High School was honored as Posey County Teacher of the Year. Officials say the award is given to an outstanding Posey County teacher or administrator who they believe is a dedicated and skilled leader. Winegar is a 2001 graduate of North Posey.

Posey County Emergency Management posted on Facebook that lane restrictions will soon be in place on part of State Road 68 in Posey County. The Indiana Department of Transportation says that starting next Tuesday May 2nd, crews with WIN Energy will be restricting eastbound traffic on SR 68 near Poseyville. INDOT says the restrictions will be in place to allow crews to frame and set utility poles along the road. After each pole is set, the lane restrictions will move east along with the work. INDOT says the work is expected to last through the end of June. Drivers are reminded to slow down and stay alert near crews as they work.
