Indiana Senator Mike Braun is eyeing the state's top leadership position. A Wednesday morning filing in the Office of the Secretary of State shows that Braun intends to run for Indiana's governor on the Republican ticket. Braun was elected to the US Senate in 2018. He's also a native of Jasper and graduated from Jasper High School in 1972. Indiana's next gubernatorial election will take place on Tuesday, November 5th, 2024. 

 

Coming up this Saturday in Mt. Vernon, United Fidelity Bank is having their 14th annual Pictures with Santa. The event will take place at the Mt. Vernon banking center located at 500 East Fourth Street from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM. Stop by and enjoy free pictures with Santa, refreshments, and crafts for the kids. Pictures with Santa is designed to help achieve the Bank’s mission while putting smiles on the faces of the children of Posey County. Pictures with Santa is free of charge including pictures, refreshments, and crafts courtesy of United Fidelity Bank.

 

Immanuel United Church of Christ posted on Facebook that this Saturday they are having a free community youth movie night. It will start at 5:00 PM as there will be a light meal of chicken nuggets and mac n cheese. The movie will follow, and they will be showing Slumberland. The Church mentioned to bring your favorite blanket or camp chair for your comfort. It is an indoor event.

 

Also coming up this Saturday at 5:00 PM, Poseyville will have their tree lighting at the Community Center. Mt. Vernon’s Christmas on Main Street will be Friday December 9th with a Christmas Parade and tree lighting.

 

Christmas in New Harmony kicks off this weekend with the Christmas Tree lighting at the New Harmony Inn on Friday at 5:30 PM. It is free for everyone to attend. Then on Saturday and Sunday there are all kinds of events throughout the day. Horse and Carriage rides will be available on Saturday and Sunday for $5. Vendors will also be on site Saturday from 9:00 AM-5:00 PM and Sunday from 10:00 AM-4:00 PM at the Gymnasium and Community House #2.

 

The Downtown Evansville Economic Improvement District is hosting the 9th annual Downtown Christmas event this weekend. According to a press release, that event is happening this Saturday on Main Street from 11:00 AM until 3:00 PM. Guests are invited to enjoy a variety of free, family-oriented activities including pony rides, pictures with Santa, hot cocoa, holiday crafts and a giant walk-in snow globe. Children can mail their letters to Santa in Santa’s mailbox while at the event. It will be located at the corner of 3rd and Main St. Officials say the letters must be in the box by Dec. 15 with a name and return address to receive a response from Santa Claus before Christmas. Shops and restaurants along Main Street and throughout downtown will be open for business. The Economic Improvement District will have a tent at 318 Main Street to sell Downtown Evansville merchandise, including beanies, commemorative holiday t-shirts and hooded sweatshirts.

 

Evansville native Don Mattingly has found a new coaching home. It was reported that Mattingly has finalized a deal to become the bench coach for the Toronto Blue Jays. Mattingly was let go by the Miami Marlins at the end of this past season after spending 7 years as their manager. He also managed the Dodgers from 2011-2015.

 

Sports Tonight: 

- North Posey Girls Basketball is home against Boonville. The JV game is at 5:30 PM and the Varsity game will follow around 7:00 PM. 

- Evansville Men's Basketball (2-6) welcomes the Salukis of SIU to Ford Center at 7:00 PM. This is the MVC opener. 

- USI Men's Basketball (3-3) is on the road at Western Illinois at 7:30 PM. 

- Other Men's College Basketball Tonight: #10 IU (6-0) vs #18 UNC (5-2) at 8:15 PM. Notre Dame (5-1) vs Michigan State at 8:15 PM. WKU (6-1) travels to Austin Peay at 7:00 PM. #5 Purdue (6-0) is at Florida State at 6:15 PM. Indiana State (6-1) plays host to Drake at 6:00 PM. Butler (4-2) is home taking on Kansas State at 5:30 PM. 

- The Indiana Pacers (12-8) continue their long 7-game road trip with stop number 3 in Sacramento against the Kings at 9:00 PM.
