Week 1 of the high school football regular season is one week from tonight. This evening is scrimmage night for high school teams throughout Indiana. In Posey County, both Mt. Vernon and North Posey play their scrimmage on the road. Mt. Vernon Football is at Harrison tonight and North Posey travels to Princeton. Earlier this week, the first Indiana Football Coaches Association poll was released and there are several tri-state teams receiving preseason recognition. In Class 5A, Castle is ranked 8th and North is 15th. Class 4A features Heritage Hills ranked 10th, Reitz 12th, and Jasper 13th. Moving on to Class 3A where Gibson Southern is ranked 2nd, Memorial 4th, Mater Dei 7th, and Southridge 16th. For Class 2A, North Posey is ranked 15th. Finally in Class 1A, Spring Valley is ranked 6th and North Daviess is 12th.
The Ports of Indiana’s Megamodal Site here in Mount Vernon has earned national recognition. The site received a Silver designation from REDI Sites, which evaluates industrial properties for their readiness for major development. The Mount Vernon site was evaluated on utilities, environmental factors, ease of development, ownership and logistics. With direct access to barge, rail and highway transportation, officials say the site is positioned to attract major manufacturing, energy and logistics projects. Ports of Indiana CEO Jody Peacock says the national designation confirms Mount Vernon is ready to compete for major new economic development projects.
A large portion of Evansville’s west side is under a boil water advisory, including the entire University of Southern Indiana campus. The advisory applies to residents living south of Diamond Avenue and west of St. Joseph Avenue. Officials say those residents should boil their water before using it for drinking, cooking, making ice, or brushing their teeth. Evansville Water and Sewer Utility officials say the advisory was prompted by a water main break involving a private commercial water line, which has resulted in low water pressure in the area. Residents should continue boiling their water until officials lift the advisory.
Expressway Auto Group is launching a new two-year paid apprenticeship program aimed at training the next generation of automotive technicians. The Expressway Technician Academy officially launches this coming Monday, August 17th, and is designed to address the growing need for skilled technicians in the automotive industry. The program combines classroom instruction with hands-on training in an actual dealership service environment. Students will attend classes on weekdays at 200 North Royal Avenue in Evansville, from 8:00 AM to 2:30 PM. The two-year program is free for accepted students, who will be paid while they train. Students will use CDX curriculum and gain hands-on experience in dealership service departments. Those who successfully complete the program are guaranteed a position at an Expressway Auto Group store. Graduates will also receive a starter tool package, including a toolbox and the tools needed to begin their careers. They must remain employed with Expressway for three years after graduation to keep the tools. Expressway developed the program with help from SWIN Workforce to address the shortage of qualified automotive technicians and create a pathway into the skilled trades. Spots are still available. In Major League Baseball on Thursday, the St. Louis Cardinals were off from game action. They begin a 3-game series at the Chicago Cubs this afternoon at 1:20 PM. The Cardinals have won 3-straight series and are 61-60 on the season.
The Chicago Cubs could not complete the 3-game sweep in Washington vs the Nationals yesterday as the Cubs got shutout, 7-0. Chicago only had one hit in the game. The Cubs are 71-51 overall.
The Cincinnati Reds held off the Chicago White Sox, 9-8 in the finale of a 3-game set in Chicago. The Reds won 2-of-3 in the series. Cincinnati is 58-62 and heads home to play the Miami Marlins in a 3-game series this evening at 5:10 PM. The White Sox are 62-58 and travel to Detroit tonight for a 3-game set with the Tigers at 5:40 PM.
From the NFL last night, the Indianapolis Colts played their first preseason game of the year at the New England Patriots and the game ended in a 13-13 tie. The Colts played two quarterbacks last night, but neither one was their expected Week 1 starter, Daniel Jones. Anthony Richardson got the start and went 11-for-14 passing for 145 yards with one interception. Richardson rushed the ball six times for 53 yards, one touchdown, and fumbled once. Riley Leonard went 10-for-21 passing for 89 yards and one interception. Indianapolis plays their next preseason game on Saturday, August 22nd at home vs the Atlanta Falcons.
