Some local teenagers in Mount Vernon are getting a firsthand look at what it takes to become a firefighter. Yesterday marked the start of a two-day youth fire camp hosted by the Black Township Fire Department. Twenty-seven campers are learning valuable skills, including fire safety, how to properly use a fire extinguisher, CPR, and basic first aid. Firefighters are also introducing participants to the department's cadet program, encouraging those interested to explore a future career in the fire service. Fire Chief Jay Price says the camp gives young people a unique opportunity to see firsthand what firefighters do every day. The camp continues today at Fire Station One in Mount Vernon. Organizers say interest in the program keeps growing, with participation increasing each year.
A recent North Posey High School graduate is being recognized for his musical talent. The University of Southern Indiana has announced Aiden MacMunn as the winner of the 2026 Hagemann Award for Musical Performance. MacMunn earned the top honor for his vocal performance during the awards finalists’ concert, held July 16 at the USI Performance Center. As the winner, MacMunn receives a one-thousand-dollar cash prize along with the Alexander Scholarship, valued at two thousand dollars. The three other finalists each received five hundred dollars. USI says MacMunn was active in North Posey's vocal music and theatre programs. The Hagemann Awards were established by Posey County native and internationally acclaimed composer and conductor Philip Hagemann to encourage and recognize young musicians in the community. The competition is presented by the USI Music Program and supported through a gift from Hagemann.
Drivers traveling between eastern Posey County and western Vanderburgh County have some good news. The Broadway Avenue bridge at the county line has reopened to traffic more than two weeks ahead of schedule. The road had been closed since March between Posey County Line Road and Old Mount Vernon Road while crews replaced the aging bridge, which dated back to the 1930s. The project was funded through the Indiana Department of Transportation's Community Crossings Matching Grant Program. County officials say the bridge is now fully open, restoring a key connection between Posey and Vanderburgh counties well ahead of the original August 17th reopening date.
