A Posey County woman is facing a felony charge after allegedly leading deputies on a pursuit along State Road 62 on Thursday. Authorities say 62-year-old Jianqing Matthews was arrested and booked into the Posey County Jail on a Level 6 felony charge of Resisting Law Enforcement with a Vehicle. She was also cited for speeding. According to the Posey County Sheriff's Office, a deputy spotted a black SUV traveling at a high rate of speed near State Road 62 and the William Keck Bypass. When the deputy attempted a traffic stop, investigators say the driver refused to pull over and continued east on State Road 62. The pursuit ended near the intersection of State Road 62 and St. Philips Road, where officers with the Mt. Vernon Police Department assisted in bringing the vehicle to a stop. Deputies say Matthews does not speak English, so they used the Axon translation feature on a body-worn camera to communicate with her. Authorities say the translation technology allowed deputies to safely take Matthews into custody without further incident.
This coming Monday is the first official day of practice for high school fall sports teams throughout Indiana, which means we are a few weeks away from high school football games. The official IHSAA Scrimmage night for Mt. Vernon and North Posey Football is on August 14th and week 1 for both teams is August 21st. Mt. Vernon Football announced that they are having a community night on Saturday, August 8th at 4:15 PM. The evening will consist of scrimmages from 3rd-8th grade teams, contests, and the night is capped off with the high school scrimmage around 7:00 PM. They say the entry fee for the night is a pack of Gatorade.
Indiana is expanding Medicaid coverage to include select weight-loss medications for eligible residents living with obesity. Governor Mike Braun announced on Thursday that the state will participate in the federal BALANCE demonstration program through the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation. Under the agreement, drug manufacturers Eli Lilly and Novo Nordisk will provide select GLP-1 medications, including Wegovy and Zepbound, to Indiana's Medicaid program for $245 per member each month. After federal contributions, the state's share will be just over $85 per person. State officials say more than 70 percent of Indiana adults are living with obesity or are overweight. They believe expanding access to these medications could improve public health, help more Hoosiers stay in or return to the workforce, and reduce dependence on other public assistance programs. The state says additional information on eligibility requirements and when the expanded coverage will begin will be released as the agreement is finalized.
In Major League Baseball on Thursday, the St. Louis Cardinals lost the finale of their 4-game series at home vs the Chicago Cubs, 4-2 in 10 innings. JJ Wetherholt hit his 16th home run in the loss. The Cubs won 3-of-4 in the series and they are 62-47 overall. The Cardinals fall to a game below .500 at 54-55. Chicago returns home to play a 3-game series vs the New York Yankees today at 1:20 PM and St. Louis is on the road in Toronto to play the Blue Jays in a 3-game set tonight at 6:07 PM.
The Cincinnati Reds walked off the Pittsburgh Pirates in the opener of a 4-game series, 3-2. Nathaniel Lowe had the game-winning RBI in the 9th and Elly De La Cruz had a 3-hit game. The Reds are 51-57. Game 2 of the 4-game series is tonight at 5:10 PM.
The Chicago White Sox picked up a walk-off win for the second day in a row against the New York Yankees, 2-1 in 11 innings. Chicago and New York split the 4-game series. The White Sox move to 57-51 and start a 3-game series at the Tampa Bay Rays this evening at 6:10 PM.
