A traffic stop in Mount Vernon led to a methamphetamine arrest of 36-year-old Tyler Givens. Mount Vernon Police say an officer stopped a gray Chevrolet Equinox around 4:05 on Thursday morning after seeing the vehicle swerving across the center line several times on East Fourth Street near Mill Street. Police say the officer smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle during the stop. A search reportedly turned up a baggie of suspected marijuana in the center console. Officers also found a backpack belonging to Givens. Police say a tie-dye coin purse inside the backpack contained a baggie of suspected methamphetamine. Givens was arrested and lodged in the Posey County Jail. He is being charged with Possession of Methamphetamine, which is a Level 6 Felony and Possession of Marijuana, which is a Class B Misdemeanor.

Indiana Governor Mike Braun is extending Indiana’s suspension of the gasoline usage tax and gasoline excise tax through October 6th. The governor’s office says the move will provide Hoosiers with another month of relief from high gas prices. The suspensions are part of an energy emergency that took effect on August 7th and apply in all 92 Indiana counties. Braun says he’ll reevaluate the situation in 30 days to determine whether another suspension is necessary. The energy emergency gives the governor a 120-day window of authority to take action. Braun says affordability is his top priority, and the gas tax suspensions are helping Hoosiers get some of the cheapest gas in the country. He also says his proposed budget will use state reserves to keep state and local infrastructure projects fully funded.
