A Posey County man described by authorities as a sex offender with violent tendencies is back in custody after a search Saturday morning. 54-year-old Richard Davis was arrested in Gibson County after a driver spotted him walking along Highway 41 in Fort Branch and called 911. Gibson County sheriff’s deputies responded and took Davis into custody. Authorities say Davis removed his ankle monitor Thursday, shortly after being released from prison. Before he was found in Gibson County, Davis was last seen in Evansville, where police had issued a “Be on the Lookout” alert. Davis is from Posey County and is expected to be turned over to authorities there.
High School Football season is right around the corner, and the Mount Vernon High School football program is giving local residents a chance to save money while supporting its players. The football team is selling Power Cards until this Thursday at 5:00 PM. The cards offer discounts at several local businesses in Mount Vernon and on Evansville’s West Side. Proceeds from the sale will go directly to Mount Vernon football players in grades seven through twelve. The money helps provide equipment, jerseys, and meals before and after games. Players have already been out in the community selling the cards. But if you haven’t been able to connect with a player, you can email football@mvschool.org, and the football program will connect you with a player who can get you a card.
North Posey Junior High School is having tryouts this week for any student athlete that is interested in joining the cheer team. You must have a sports physical on file prior to tryouts. There is a mandatory workshop today from 3:00-4:30 PM and tryouts are tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 PM.
Mt. Vernon Junior High School is having tryouts for their volleyball teams this week. This is for any 6th, 7th, and 8th grade student athlete that is interested in playing volleyball this year. All students must have an athletic waiver on file. There is an open gym this Wednesday after school from 3:15-4:45 PM. Tryouts are this Thursday and Friday after school from 3:15-4:45 PM.
In Major League Baseball on Sunday, the St. Louis Cardinals earned a series win at home vs the Colorado Rockies, 7-4. With the game tied 4-4, the Cardinals scored three runs in the 8th inning to take the lead for good. JJ Wetherholt had the go-head two-run triple with two outs in the 8th inning. St. Louis as a team clobbered 14 hits and Ivan Herrera had a four-hit game. Alec Burleson cranked his 19th home run of the season. The Cardinals took 2-of-3 in the series and are 59-59. They start a 3-game series at home tonight vs the Philadelphia Phillies at 6:45 PM.
The Chicago Cubs cruised past the Royals in Kansas City, 10-2. The Cubs had 18 hits in the victory. Michael Busch, Alex Bregman, and Ian Happ all had three-hit games. Happ launched his 20th home run, and Miguel Amaya walloped his 4th home run. Chicago won 2-of-3 in the series and are 69-50 overall. The Cubs have today off, before beginning a 3-game set at the Washington Nationals tomorrow evening.
The Cincinnati Reds after winning 4-straight games heading into this past weekend, got swept by the Nationals in a 3-game series in Washington. The Reds lost yesterday, 7-1 and only scored six runs in the series. Cincinnati is 56-61 on the season. They are off today and get a 3-game series underway at the Chicago White Sox tomorrow night.
The Chicago White Sox picked up a series win at home vs the Cleveland Guardians thanks to a 5-3 victory on Sunday. The White Sox scored four of their runs in the 3rd inning. Colson Montgomery hit a 3-run blast for his 26th home run. The White Sox are 61-56 on the year.
