The 2nd Annual Indiana Sports Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony was held on Saturday at the Old National Events Plaza in downtown Evansville. Several members from the tri-state were inducted Saturday night. Mt. Vernon graduate and former Mt. Vernon Athletic Director Gary Redman was inducted. He coached Baseball at the University of Southern Indiana from 1988-1993 winning almost 200 games and had back-to-back 40+ win seasons in 1992 and 1993. His teams also won the GLVC regular season title in 92 and 93 as well as the GLVC Tournament in 93. He played Baseball at Mt. Vernon where he was a part of the 1971 Semi-State team and played at Three Rivers Community College and USI. Redman spent 21 years as the Athletic Director at Mt. Vernon and is in both the Mt. Vernon and USI Athletic Hall of Fame.

USI Director of Athletics Jon Mark Hall was also inducted Saturday night. He has been USI’s Director of Athletics since January of 2002. Under his supervision, the USI Department of Athletics has seen its teams win a total of 45 GLVC Championships and make 82 NCAA post-season appearances. USI Baseball has won two Division II National Championships (2010 and 2014) and Softball won a Division II National Championship in 2018. He most recently guided USI’s voyage to Division I and the Ohio Valley Conference.

USI Softball Head Coach Sue Kunkle was inducted as well. She has coached the Lady Eagles for the past 24 seasons and is USI’s all-time winningest coach with 649 victories. In addition to winning the Division II National Championship in 2018, Kunkle has led the program to two other NCAA Division II World Series.

A pair of University of Evansville Baseball graduates and brothers went into the Indiana Sports Hall of Fame Saturday night and that is Wes and Jamey Carroll. Wes is currently the Head Baseball Coach for the Purple Aces and has been for the past 15 seasons. As a player Wes became UE’s first Freshman All-American selection in 1998. He hit .299 or better in all four years at UE, leads the program with 74 career doubles, and was named to the Missouri Valley Conference All-Centennial Team in 2007. Jamey Carroll after playing for the Purple Aces enjoyed a 12-year Major League Baseball career with Montreal, Washington, Colorado, Cleveland, the Los Angeles Dodgers, Minnesota, and Kansas City. He was a career .272 hitter and last year became just the third former Purple Aces Baseball player to have his number 23 jersey retired.

 

The Poseyville Farmer’s Market posted on Facebook that coming up tomorrow at their next market, you can bring your little ones by from 5:00 until 6:00 PM and have the Town Marshall, Charles Carter fingerprint them. They say it’s not only great fun for the kiddos, but also gives parents a much-needed piece of information for years to come.

 

United Way of Posey County is selling Hawg n’ Sauce goodies for a fundraiser. The pick-up date in Friday August 25th from 9:00 AM until noon. United Way of Posey County receives 40% back. All orders and payments are due by Wednesday, August 23rd. If you are writing a check, they say to make it out to the United Way of Posey County. Orders will be picked up at the United Way of Posey County’s office on the 25th, which is located at 215 South Kimball Street in Mt. Vernon. Coming up tonight on Posey County Radio, you can hear both the Mt. Vernon and North Posey Football Coaches Show. The Mt. Vernon show with Allen Buck and Head Coach Justin Fisher will be broadcasted live from United Fidelity Bank in Mt. Vernon at 5:00 PM on 106.7 FM WMVI. The North Posey show will be broadcasted live from The Wheelhouse at 5:30 PM with Jordan Fisher and Head Coach Waylen Schank. Both can be heard online at poseycountyradio.com. This Friday is Week 1 of the Football season and it’s a Posey County battle to start things off. Mt. Vernon plays host to North Posey Friday evening.

Sports

  • North Posey Volleyball plays their first regular season match at Gibson Southern tonight. The JV starts at 5:30 PM and the Varsity gets underway at 7:00 PM.

 

  • Mt. Vernon Boys Tennis is at home against Pike Central at 5:00 PM.

 

  • Mt. Vernon Girls Soccer had their match at Evansville Christian canceled this evening.

 

  • The St. Louis Cardinals (52-66) are back in action tonight after having a rare Sunday off day. The Redbirds welcome the Oakland Athletics to Busch Stadium for a 6:45 PM first pitch. Catch the game on 106.7 FM WMVI.

 

  • The Chicago Cubs, Cincinnati Reds, and Chicago White Sox all have tonight off. The Cubs are 61-57 and the Reds ate 62-58, both just a half game out of the final wild card spot in the National League. As far as the division race in the National League Central, the Cubs and Reds are 3.5 games back of first place Milwaukee.
