North Posey Football opened the 2026 season with a comeback win at Southridge on Friday night. The Vikings rallied from an early 14-point deficit to knock off Southridge on the road, 34-21. Southridge scored on its first two possessions to take a 14-0 lead, but North Posey answered with a touchdown pass from Carter Schickel to Remi Johnson. Then, late in the first half, the Vikings took advantage of a Southridge fumble. Schickel connected with Brody Fehn for 28 yards and then found Fehn again for a 13-yard touchdown with just 11 seconds left before halftime to tie the game, 14-14. North Posey took control in the third quarter. Ethan Ashby kicked field goals from 45 and 29 yards to put the Vikings ahead, 20-14. Then Johnson came up with a big play on defense, intercepting a Southridge pass. Three plays later, Schickel scored on a six-yard touchdown run to make it 27-14. Southridge fought back in the fourth quarter. Parker Steckler scored on a one-yard touchdown run, cutting the deficit to 27-21 with just under 10 minutes to play. North Posey answered immediately as on the Vikings' next offensive snap, Cade Mauck broke loose for a 66-yard touchdown run, restoring the 13-point lead. The North Posey defense shut the door from there, with Johnson recording his second interception of the night in the closing seconds to seal the victory. Mauck led the Vikings' rushing attack with 138 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. Schickel completed 19 of 24 passes for 179 yards and two touchdowns, while also adding a rushing score. Johnson had nine catches for 66 yards and a touchdown to go along with his two interceptions. Fehn finished with seven catches for 98 yards and a touchdown. North Posey starts the season 1-0 and returns home this Friday night for its home opener vs the Tecumseh Braves.
Mount Vernon Football outgained Forest Park by nearly 160 yards on Friday night, but costly mistakes proved to be the difference as the Rangers edged the Wildcats, 16-15 at Forest Park. Mount Vernon struck first in the opening quarter when quarterback Johnathon Crowe turned a passing play into an 87-yard touchdown run. Forest Park answered in the second quarter with a four-yard touchdown run by Hudson King, tying the game 7-7. Then, with just over three minutes remaining in the first half, a bad snap on a Mount Vernon punt attempt resulted in a safety. That gave Forest Park a 9-7 lead heading into halftime. The Rangers extended their advantage in the third quarter when Carter Jochem scored on a five-yard touchdown run, making it 16-7. Mount Vernon responded late in the quarter. Eastin Hall scored on a one-yard touchdown run with 46 seconds remaining, then added the two-point conversion himself to pull the Wildcats within one at 16-15. That was the final scoring play of the game as the Rangers held on for the week on win. Mount Vernon finished the night with 370 yards of total offense, including 268 yards on the ground. Forest Park finished with just 212 total yards. Mt. Vernon hopes to bounce back this Friday night as they welcome Boonville for the home opener.

MSD of North Posey County has announced that they are offering free developmental screening this year for children 3 to 5 years old that are living in the North Posey school district. Families who are concerned about their child’s development or speech skills may call for a no-cost appointment. Clinics will run once a month from September through April. The first clinic date is September 9th. To schedule an appointment, you can call 812-682-0147.
A long-time Posey County restaurant is getting ready to close its doors at the end of this week. The Red Wagon Restaurant will serve its final meal this coming Sunday, August 30th, after nearly 18 years in business. In a release, the owners and operators say health concerns affecting key members of the staff led to the decision. They say they searched for a replacement team but ultimately decided closing was the best option. The owners say the closure marks the end of an era for a restaurant that has created countless memories for customers and the community. The restaurant first opened in October of 2008 as The Feed Mill. It was rebranded as the Red Wagon in 2011.
Tonight, in local high school sports, Mt. Vernon Volleyball is on the road at Harrison. The JV match begins at 5:30 PM and the Varsity match is at 7:00 PM.

North Posey Girls and Boys Soccer is at home taking on Gibson Southern. The girls’ match is at 5:00 PM and the boys match follows around 7:00 PM.
In Major League Baseball on Sunday, the St. Louis Cardinals got swept in a 3-game series at the Philadelphia Phillies. The loss yesterday happened in a stunning way for the Cardinals. St. Louis led 4-0 entering the 9th inning and Riley O’Brien allowed six runs in the 9th. Kyle Schwarber hit a walk-off 2-run home run to give the Phillies a 6-4 win. Alec Burleson had 2-hit game and drove in a pair of runs. St. Louis went 5-6 on their 11-game road trip. The Cardinals are 66-66 on the season and have today off, before starting a 3-game series at home vs the Baltimore Orioles tomorrow night.
The Chicago Cubs avoided a 3-game sweep at the Seattle Mariners in a big way yesterday with a 19-2 win. The Cubs slugged four home runs, including two grand slams. Ian Happ and Pedro Ramirez each hit a grand slam. Michael Conforto and Pete Crow-Armstrong also crushed home runs for Chicago. The Cubs are 75-56 overall and get a 3-game set underway at the Arizona Diamondbacks this evening at 8:40 PM.
The Cincinnati Reds allowed four runs in the 7th inning and lost to the Diamondbacks in Arizona, 5-3. Cincinnati lost 2-of-3 in the series and are 62-69 on the year. The Reds head to San Francisco for a 3-game series vs the Giants tonight at 8:45 PM.
In Chicago, the White Sox earned a 2-1 victory vs the New York Mets, thanks to a Tristan Peters walk-off solo home run. The White Sox won 2-of-3 in the series and are 68-62. They continue their homestand this evening with the first of three vs the Texas Rangers at 6:40 PM.
