A Mt. Vernon man is now waiting to be sentenced after a jury found him guilty of multiple charges stemming from an incident earlier this year. According to the Posey County Prosecutor’s Office, 49-year-old Jason Edward Overton was arrested by Mt. Vernon Police just after midnight on January 20th. Evidence shown in court revealed Overton was pulled over for driving with a fake license plate. Additionally, officers say they discovered he did not have a valid driver’s license either. Police say after searching him, they found more than five grams of methamphetamine. Following the two-day trial, Overton was found guilty of Operating a Motor Vehicle After Forfeiture of License for Life, Possession of Methamphetamine, Unlawful Possession of a Syringe and Possession of Paraphernalia. After the guilty verdict, the jury then heard evidence in a second phase of the trial and found Overton guilty of being a habitual offender under Indiana law due to his prior felony convictions. Those convictions include Resisting Law Enforcement, Carrying a Handgun Without a License and Operating a Motor Vehicle After Forfeiture of License for Life. Overton sentencing is scheduled for October 3rd.

Firefighters with Black Township Fire & Rescue as well as New Harmony Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to a utility pole fire Saturday morning. Officials say CenterPoint Energy was called to the area to cut power so the fire could be put out.

An Indiana State Police trooper says he was patrolling the school zone on SR 62 at Marr’s Elementary School on Friday morning around 8:00 AM, when a 2017 Dodge Journey flew by at 81 MPH in a 45 MPH school zone. According to a press release, the speeding vehicle nearly crashed into another car. Police pulled the driver over and identified him as Jerome Abernathy, 34, of Crete, Illinois. Abernathy appeared impaired and failed sobriety tests. Investigators revealed Abernathy had a BAC of .16%, which is twice the legal limit. He was arrested and taken to the Posey County Jail where he is facing a misdemeanor charge of Reckless Driving and a felony charge of Operating a Vehicle while Intoxicated with a Prior Conviction.

Today, Evansville Water and Sewer Utility will switch disinfectants for the second time this year. Twice a year, they change the disinfectant used in the water treatment process.
