Today is the first official day of practice for high school fall sports teams throughout Indiana, which means we are a few weeks away from high school football games. The official IHSAA Scrimmage night for Mt. Vernon and North Posey Football is on August 14th and week 1 for both teams is August 21st. Mt. Vernon Football announced that they are having a community night on Saturday, August 8th at 4:15 PM. The evening will consist of scrimmages from 3rd-8th grade teams, contests, and the night is capped off with the high school scrimmage around 7:00 PM. They say the entry fee for the night is a pack of Gatorade.
Posey County Radio is the home for both Mt. Vernon and North Posey Football once again this season. Mt. Vernon Football games will be on 106.7 FM WMVI and North Posey Football games will be on 98.9 FM WPIW. Both teams online stream can be found at poseycountyradio.com.
The Posey County Sherrif’s Office says that their annual National Night Out scheduled for tomorrow evening has been cancelled this year. They say that it is due to conflicting schedules with event organizers. They plan for it to return next year.
United Way of Southwestern Indiana is investing nearly one million dollars to expand access to mental health services across the region. The organization has awarded more than $976,000 through the third round of its Pathways to Potential Mental Health initiative. The funding is aimed at improving access to behavioral health care, increasing mental health awareness, and helping individuals and families build resilience. Grant recipients were selected for programs serving low-income and underserved residents in Spencer, Vanderburgh, and Warrick counties, with priority given to people who are uninsured or underinsured. Among the largest awards, the University of Evansville's Emily M. Young Mental Health Clinic received $250,000 to expand services for lower-income individuals and families. Southwestern Behavioral Health Care was awarded nearly $189,000 to expand its Neurodevelopment Center. Other recipients include Holly's House for counseling services for children impacted by violence and abuse, Youth First for school-based mental health programs for schools in the Evansville Vanderburgh School Corporation, Catholic Charities for individual and family counseling, and Community Action Program of Evansville for its Growing Healthy Minds program serving Head Start children. United Way officials say the grants are designed to reduce barriers to affordable mental health care and strengthen behavioral health resources throughout Southwestern Indiana.
In Major League Baseball on Sunday, the St. Louis Cardinals avoided a 3-game sweep in Toronto as they beat the Blue Jays, 5-1. With game tied 1-1 entering the 9th inning, the Cardinals scored 4 runs in the top of the 9th inning. Jordan Walker drove in 2 runs, Jose Fermin had the go-ahead hit in the 9th, and starting pitcher Matthew Liberatore allowed only 1 hit over 6 innings. St. Louis improves to 55-57. The Cardinals start a 3-game series at the New York Yankees tonight at 6:05 PM.
The Chicago Cubs lost the finale of their 3-game set at home vs the New York Yankees, 2-1. The Cubs only had 4 hits in the game. Chicago lost 2-of-3 in the series and are 63-49 on the season. The Cubs welcome the Los Angeles Dodgers this evening for a 3-game set at 7:05 PM.
In Cincinnati, the Reds ended their 4-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates with a 10-2 victory. The Reds had 10 hits, as Elly De La Cruz, Tyler Stephenson, and Nathaniel Lowe all had 2 RBI games. Stephenson hit his 9th home run, Ke’Bryan Hayes blasted his 4th home run, and Sal Stewart walloped his team-leading 24th home run. Cincinnati won 3-of-4 in the series and are 53-58 overall. The Reds have today off, before taking on the Athletics at home tomorrow night in a 3-game series.
The Chicago White Sox earned a series victory at the Tampa Bay Rays thanks to 9-1 win yesterday. Everson Pereira had a 4 RBI game, including hitting his 4th home run. Andrew Benintendi cranked his 12th home run and Miguel Vargas hit his 24th home run. The White Sox are 59-52 and have today off. Their next game is tomorrow evening in Boston when they battle the Red Sox in a 3-game set.
