A Poseyville man is facing multiple charges after an early Saturday morning traffic stop in Evansville. Police say just before 3:30 AM on Saturday morning, officers pulled over 23-year-old Jaxon W. Wiggins after allegedly catching him speeding on West Franklin Street and running a red light. According to investigators, officers noticed Wiggins had bloodshot eyes and smelled of alcohol. Court documents say he admitted to drinking beer at Bally's before getting behind the wheel. Police say Wiggins failed several field sobriety tests and registered a blood alcohol concentration of point-one-two-seven, above Indiana's legal limit. During a search of the vehicle, officers reportedly found a marijuana cigarette and a marijuana grinder. Wiggins was taken to the Vanderburgh County Jail. He's charged with speeding, disregarding a flashing signal, operating while intoxicated, possession of marijuana, and possession of paraphernalia.
The Posey County Area Plan Commission is holding a special meeting tonight at 5:30 PM at the Hovey House, which is located at 330 Walnut Street in Mt. Vernon. The meeting is being held to receive public comments concerning proposed amendments to the Unified Development Ordinance of Posey County and consideration of issuing a letter of support for the Posey County Soil and Water Conservation District.
Family Matters of Posey County is helping local families prepare for the new school year tomorrow afternoon with its annual Backpack Give-Away. Tuesday’s event is from Noon until 3:00 PM at Hedges Central Gymnasium in Mount Vernon. Appointments are required, and families can register through the organization's Facebook page or by calling 812-838-6875. Organizers say the program helps ensure local students return to school with the supplies they need while easing the financial burden on families.
MSD of Mt. Vernon is having their Freshman Orientation tomorrow evening at 6:00 PM. The night will be a chance for incoming freshman students to explore the building, find classrooms and lockers, learn important MV policies and procedures, and hear from administration and counselors.
The Posey County Prosecutor's Office and Posey County Circuit Court are giving individuals with outstanding child support warrants an opportunity to resolve their case without being taken into custody. A Child Support Warrant Compliance Day will be held this Thursday, with court sessions scheduled for 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM. Eligible individuals can voluntarily appear before a judge to have their warrant addressed and receive a new court date or additional instructions. Prosecutor Thomas Clowers says the event is designed to encourage compliance while reducing the need for an arrest. Participants should bring a valid photo ID. Officials also stress that the event does not forgive unpaid child support or clear any criminal warrants unrelated to child support.
A favorite summer tradition is lighting up Mesker Park Zoo and Botanic Garden once again. Wild Summer Lights return this Thursday, with gates opening at 6 p.m. The event will be held Thursdays through Sundays from 6 until 10 p.m. and runs through October 4th. Visitors can enjoy a mile-long trail of colorful Chinese lantern displays, along with sensory-friendly nights, live music, local food trucks, and other family-friendly attractions. Wild Summer Lights kicks off Thursday evening and continues through the fall at Mesker Park Zoo.
Indiana is temporarily putting the brakes on new providers for dozens of Medicare and Medicaid services. State officials say the six-month moratorium is aimed at reducing waste, fraud, and abuse in programs they believe are at high risk for improper spending. Among the services affected are Adult Family Care, home-delivered meals, and respite care. The moratorium takes effect Saturday, August 1st, and is scheduled to remain in place for six months. The move is part of Governor Mike Braun's effort to rein in rising taxpayer costs tied to Indiana's state-run health care programs.
In Major League Baseball on Sunday, the St. Louis Cardinals lost the finale of a 3-game series at home to the Cincinnati Reds, 5-3 in 10 innings. The Chicago Cubs rallied late but couldn’t pull off the 3-game sweep at the Pittsburgh Pirates as the Cubs got beat 8-7. Chicago trailed 8-4 entering the 8th inning. They scored a run in the 8th inning and two more runs in the 9th inning but fell short of a win. The Cubs are 59-46 overall.
In Chicago, the White Sox salvaged a game in their 3-game series vs Houston as they blasted the Astros, 12-3. The White Sox are 55-49 and welcome the New York Yankees for a 4-game series this evening at 6:40 PM.
