A long-shuttered bridge spanning the Wabash River could be on its way back into service. Officials say U.S. Senator Jim Banks is pursuing 25 million dollars in federal funding to repair the New Harmony Bridge, which connects New Harmony, Indiana, with White County, Illinois. The bridge, built in 1930, has been closed since 2012 after inspectors determined it was no longer structurally sound.  The project would also require about five million dollars in matching funds from state, local, and private sources. Speaking to the Posey County Council last week, New Harmony Town Council member Rodney Clark said local commitments are already coming together, including funding from the town and a private donor. He argued that strong local support would make it easier to secure additional state funding. The Posey County Council approved up to one million dollars for the effort, and officials say Illinois has already committed its share. Plans call for converting the bridge to a single lane for vehicle traffic, along with a separate lane for pedestrians and bicyclists. Supporters say the two-year repair project would create about 300 jobs and generate an estimated 51 million dollars in economic impact. They also note the nearly century-old bridge continues to carry a natural gas pipeline and fiber optic line across the river.
