Several local universities celebrated commencement ceremonies over the weekend. The University of Southern Indiana recognized more than 1,600 graduates during its Spring 2026 commencement ceremonies held this past Friday and Saturday at Liberty Arena. In all, USI hosted five ceremonies over the two-day period. The Class of 2026 now joins a network of more than 55,000 USI alumni located across Indiana, the nation, and around the world. Meanwhile, the University of Evansville held its 168th commencement ceremony last Saturday at the Ford Center in downtown Evansville. University President Christopher Pietruszkiewicz, members of the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and family members gathered to honor graduates from the Class of 2026. The ceremony also included presentations for Outstanding Senior, Outstanding Teacher, and two honorary degrees. Graduates heard remarks from university leaders, the Student Government Association president, and the senior keynote speaker.

Over the weekend in local high school sports, Mt. Vernon Baseball won their game on Saturday at Wood Memorial, 13-2. It’s back-to-back wins for the Wildcats as they improve to 7-8 on the season. Mt. Vernon’s next game is tomorrow night at home vs Tecumseh at 5:30 PM.
North Posey Baseball went 1-2 in their three games played in an invitational at Jasper High School. The Vikings lost on Friday to Barr-Reeve, 4-1. They also lost their first game on Saturday vs Jasper, 11-0. Then, in the final game of the weekend they won 12-11 vs Edgewood. Mt. Vernon Softball won their lone game over the weekend at Pike Central on Saturday, 13-0. Wildcats Softball is 11-5 and they play at Mt. Carmel tomorrow night at 5:00 PM.
North Posey Softball got beat at home against Jasper on Friday, 4-2. Vikings Softball is 12-11 overall and return to action tomorrow evening at home for a game with Pike Central at 5:00 PM.
North Posey Girls Tennis lost on Saturday to Evansville Christian, 3-2. The Vikings got individual wins from Braelyn Barrett at #2 Singles (6-3, 6-0) and Kylee Heath at #3 Singles (6-2, 6-0). North Posey Girls Tennis is 6-8 on the year.
From local college sports, USI Baseball got swept in their 3-game OVC series at Southeast Missouri State. The Screaming Eagles lost on Friday, 7-5…Saturday, 11-1…and yesterday, 9-6. USI is 25-26 on the season and 8-16 in the Ohio Valley Conference. They have three games remaining at home vs Lindenwood, starting on Thursday. The Screaming Eagles are tied for 8th place in the conference standings with Western Illinois and only the top eight teams make the conference tournament next week.
Evansville Baseball was able to pick up a series win at Valparaiso, as they won 2-of-3 in their weekend series vs the Beacons. The Purple Aces lost on Friday, 6-5…won on Saturday, 6-5…and won yesterday 11-0. UE is 19-29 overall and 12-9 in the Missouri Valley Conference. With this weekend’s results, they have clinched a spot in the conference tournament next week. The top six teams make the tournament. Evansville closes the season at home with a 3-game series vs Murray State that begins on Thursday. UE is in 4th place in the MVC standings.
