North Posey Football remained unbeaten on Friday night, rolling past the North Knox Warriors 45-7 at home. North Knox struck first and controlled much of the opening quarter. The Vikings were trailing 7-0, until Bret Buecher scored on a six-yard run with 27 seconds left in the first quarter to tie the game. In the second quarter, Cade Mauck broke loose for a 75-yard touchdown run, which gave North Posey its first lead at 14-7. The Vikings added another score with just over a minute remaining before halftime. Carter Schickel connected with Buecher on a five-yard hitch, and Buecher took it the rest of the way for a touchdown, sending North Posey into halftime with a 21-7 lead. The Vikings took complete control after halftime. Mauck capped a four-play, 56-yard opening drive with a two-yard touchdown run to make it 28-7. He scored again later in the third quarter from one yard out, giving him three rushing touchdowns on the night and extending the lead to 35-7. The play that triggered the running clock was Camden Clowers taking a wide receiver screen 72 yards for a touchdown, putting North Posey ahead 42-7. Ethan Ashby finished the scoring in the fourth quarter with a 31-yard field goal and the Vikings won 45-7. Mauck led North Posey on the ground with 125 yards and three touchdowns on just 12 carries. Buecher contributed in both phases, rushing for a touchdown while catching three passes for 66 yards and another score. Clowers caught three passes for 106 yards and a touchdown, while Brody Fehn added a 45-yard reception. Schickel was nearly perfect through the air, completing eight of nine passes for 217 yards and two touchdowns. North Posey finished with 352 yards of total offense, including 217 through the air and 135 on the ground. The Vikings scored on all seven of their offensive possessions. Zeke Roosevelt led the defense with nine tackles. North Posey improved to 3-0 and will hit the road this Friday night at 3-0 Tell City.
Mt. Vernon Football had a tough test on Friday at Gibson Southern and lost to the Titans, 59-19. The Wildcats competed in the first half, scoring three times through the air, but trailed at halftime 38-19. Mt. Vernon did not score in the second half and the Titans pulled away for a convincing 59-19 win. Mt. Vernon Quarterback Johnathon Crowe completed 13 of 24 passes for 232 yards and three touchdowns. Ryan Lilleston was the big-play threat for Mount Vernon, hauling in nine passes for 212 yards and accounting for all three Wildcat touchdowns. On the ground, Saint Henderson led Mount Vernon with 64 yards on 11 carries and Eastin Hall carried 13 times for 27 yards. Mount Vernon finished with 327 yards of total offense. The Wildcats had 232 yards through the air and 95 yards on the ground. Gibson Southern piled up 564 yards of offense, including 337 passing and 227 rushing. Mt. Vernon Football is 0-3 on the season, and they travel to 0-3 South Spencer this Friday night.

Mt. Vernon River Days is this weekend in downtown Mt. Vernon. The two-day community festival is set for this Friday and Saturday. Friday’s highlights include the opening ceremony at 11:00 AM, the Smoke on the Ohio Barbecue Competition, live music throughout the day, and a fireworks show at 9:00 PM. Saturday’s events start with the River Days 5K Run at 8:00 AM. Saturday also features a Classic Car Show, a Tractor Display, a Corn Hole Tournament, more Barbecue Competition, and a Talent Show. The festival’s annual parade, which this year is honoring first responders and remembering 9/11, is set for 4:00 PM on Saturday. Live music continues Saturday evening, and the Mt. Vernon River Days concludes at 8:00 PM on Saturday.
The Indiana State Police are currently recruiting new candidates, as well as experienced law enforcement officers looking to make a lateral move to the state police. According to Sergeant Matt Ames, the department is looking for both people interested in beginning a career in law enforcement and officers currently working for other agencies. After completing the application process, lateral candidates will undergo eight weeks of training before being assigned to an Indiana State Police district. New candidates will complete 24 weeks of training, fulfilling the requirements of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy. Ames says the Indiana State Police also offers officers the opportunity to specialize, with 17 different fields available within the department. Applications are available through the Indiana government website, and the deadline to apply is October 11th.
Today in local college sports, USI Volleyball is at home vs #21 Indiana at 3:00 PM. The Screaming Eagles are 2-4 overall and the Hoosiers are 2-2.
From Major League Baseball on Sunday, the St. Louis Cardinals won a slugfest in their series finale at the Colorado Rockies, 10-6. Trailing 5-1, the Cardinals used a big six-run 5th inning to take the lead for good. All six runs in the inning were scored with two outs. St. Louis had 15 hits in the game. Ivan Herrera and Alec Burleson each had 3-hit games. Nolan Gorman belted his 9th home run. The Cardinals took 2-of-3 in the series and are 4-2 on their current 9-game game west coast road trip. St. Louis is 72-72 on the season and their final stop on this lengthy trip is San Francisco for a 3-game series vs the Giants tonight at 7:10 PM.
The Chicago Cubs could not complete the 3-game sweep in Miami vs the Marlins as the Cubs lost, 10-3. Pete Crow-Armstrong hit his team-leading 40th home run in the loss. The Cubs are 81-63 and start a 3-game set in Milwaukee today vs the Brewers at 1:10 PM. Chicago has a 0.5 game lead on the Phillies for the top wild card spot in the National League. They have a 5.5 game cushion for a playoff spot.
In Cincinnati, the Reds won their series finale against the Milwaukee Brewers, 12-8. The Reds scored in every inning except the 6th and 7th inning. They had 14 hits and the offensive attack was led by Elly De La Cruz who went 2-for-4 with 4 RBIs, two walks, and collected his 23rd home run. Cincinnati won 2-of-3 in the series to move to 69-74 overall. The Reds begin a 3-game series at the Los Angeles Dodgers this evening at 8:10 PM.
The Chicago White Sox thumped the Minnesota Twins at home, 10-1. It was just a 1-0 game after the 5th inning, but the White Sox scored three runs in the 6th, a run in the 7th, and five more runs in the 8th to pull away. Randal Grichuk blasted his 12th home run, and Kyle Teel hit his 3rd home run. Sam Antonacci went 3-for-4 with 2 RBIs as well. The White Sox are 75-68 and maintain their 2.5 game lead over the Cleveland Guardians for first place in the American League Central. The White Sox are off today before hosting the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday for a 3-game series.
