The Mt. Vernon Fire Department is accepting applications for full-time firefighter positions. The department says it is establishing an eligibility list for 2027 and 2028, with plans to hire four new firefighters beginning in January. Firefighting experience is preferred, but not required, and lateral applicants are encouraged to apply. The starting salary for a probationary firefighter is $64,020, increasing to $66,280 for a first-year firefighter. Applicants must be between 21 and 39 years old, have a valid driver’s license and high school diploma or GED. Candidates must also pass a written examination, physical agility test, drug and alcohol test and an in-person interview. Applications are due by October 1st. Applications are available for pickup at the Mt. Vernon Fire Department at 311 College Avenue.

Tomorrow night is week two of the high school football season and the North Posey Vikings have their home opener vs Tecumseh at 7:00 PM. North Posey is 1-0 after their 34-21 win at Southridge in week one and Tecumseh is also 1-0 after shutting out Princeton at home, 37-0 last week. Mt. Vernon Football also has their home opener tomorrow night vs Boonville at 7:00 PM. The Wildcats are 0-1 after a 16-15 loss at Forest Park last Friday night and the Pioneers are 1-0 after taking care of Bosse at home in week one, 45-0. Chris Cooke and Allen Buck will have the radio broadcast tomorrow evening on 106.7 FM WMVI and online at poseycountyradio.com.
Last night in local high school sports, North Posey Volleyball won in five sets at Evansville Christian. The Vikings won the first two sets and then took the 5th set, 15-12. North Posey Volleyball ends a 3-match losing streak to improve to 2-3 overall.
North Posey Boys Tennis earned another victory as they won 5-0 at Princeton. Vikings Tennis is 3-3 on the season and 2-0 in the PAC.
This evening in local high school sports, North Posey Volleyball has a home match vs Harrison. The JV starts at 5:30 PM and the Varsity is at 7:00 PM.
North Posey Boys Soccer is at home taking on South Spencer at 5:30 PM.
North Posey Boys Tennis travels to Harrison for a 4:30 PM match.
North Posey Girls Golf is at home as they compete against Gibson Southern and Southridge at 4:30 PM.
Mt. Vernon Boys Tennis is on the road at Princeton at 5:00 PM.
Mt. Vernon Girls Golf takes on Central and Castle at Helfrich Golf Course at 4:15 PM.
In Major League Baseball from Wednesday night, the St. Louis Cardinals lost their 5th-straight game as they got beat at home by the Baltimore Orioles, 8-7. Baltimore jumped in front with five runs in the first inning. Later in the game, with the Cardinals trailing 7-1, St. Louis would use a six run fifth inning to tie the game, 7-7. The Orioles scored a run in the 9th inning and that was the difference in the game. Ivan Herrera had a 3-game game and Alec Burleson and Nathan Church each drove in a pair of runs in the loss for St. Louis. The Cardinals are 66-68 on the season and look to avoid the 3-game sweep this afternoon at 1:15 PM.
The Chicago Cubs got shutout in the finale of their 3-game series at the Arizona Diamondbacks, 2-0. The Cubs only had two hits in the game. Chicago lost 2-of-3 in the series and are 76-58 overall. They have today off, before starting a 3-game series at home vs the Cincinnati Reds tomorrow afternoon.
The Cincinnati Reds avoided a 3-game sweep at the San Francisco Giants, thanks to miraculous 9th inning comeback. The Reds trailed 9-3 entering the 9th inning and scored seven runs to steal a 10-9 win. Hector Rodriguez, Elly De La Cruz, and Dane Myers all had 3-hits. Eugenio Suarez had a 2-hit game, including a grand slam in the 9th inning. It was his 19th home run. Cincinnati is 63-71 on the year. They are off today before beginning a 3-game set at the Chicago Cubs tomorrow afternoon.
In Chicago, the White Sox slugged their way to a 10-4 win at home vs the Texas Rangers. The White Sox had 15 hits in the game. Tristan Peters went 3-for-4 and drove in a pair of runs for Chicago. Peters also hit his 12th home run. Brenton Doyle had two hits and drove in four runs. Doyle scorched his 3rd home run. The White Sox won 2-of-3 in the series to move to 70-63. They are off today and travel to Minnesota for a 3-game series tomorrow night vs the Twins.
