In Posey County, the 2026-2027 school year is officially underway today. Today is the first day of school for students in the MSD of Mt. Vernon and MSD of North Posey district. An Evansville woman is headed to prison after pleading guilty to dealing methamphetamine in Posey County. 46-year-old Misty D. Cunningham was sentenced on Wednesday to 20 years on a Level 2 felony for a dealing methamphetamine conviction. Under the terms of the sentence, she'll serve 12 years in the Indiana Department of Correction, followed by five years on community corrections and three years on probation. As part of her supervision, she'll also be required to complete substance abuse treatment. According to court records, Cunningham was arrested during a routine traffic stop in October of 2025. Investigators say officers found more than 10 grams of methamphetamine between the driver's seat and the center console of the vehicle.
United Fidelity Bank in Mt. Vernon has announced that they are having their 17th Annual Community Day on Saturday, August 15th. The event will take place from 10:00 AM until 1:00 PM at the Mt. Vernon Banking Center, located at 500 East Fourth Street. The free community event is a fun way to connect with neighbors, local partners, and the Mt. Vernon team. Indiana drivers will continue to get a break at the pump. Governor Mike Braun announced yesterday that he is extending the state's gas tax holiday through September 5th by declaring a new energy emergency. The move keeps Indiana's gas excise and usage taxes suspended, helping maintain some of the lowest gas prices in the country. The previous tax holiday was set to expire tonight, and prices were expected to jump by as much as 60 cents a gallon once the taxes returned. Braun said the new emergency order creates another 120-day window under state law, allowing him to continue the tax suspension. He says he'll review the situation in 30 days to decide whether to extend the tax holiday beyond September 5th. Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita says the governor has the authority to issue the new emergency declaration. According to AAA, Indiana currently has the lowest average gas price in the nation at $3.56 a gallon, compared with the national average of just over $4. While many Hoosiers welcome the savings, some lawmakers have raised concerns about lost tax revenue for road and bridge projects. Braun says he's reached an agreement with legislative leaders to use reserve funds during the 2027 budget process to make up for the lost revenue. He says the state's reserve balance is expected to top $5 billion.
In Major League Baseball on Wednesday, the St. Louis Cardinals won the series finale at the New York Yankees, 3-1. JJ Wetherholt drove in a pair of runs. St. Louis won 2-of-3 in the series and are 57-58 on the season. The Cardinals have today off, before beginning a 3-game set at home vs the Colorado Rockies on Friday night.
The Chicago Cubs completed a 3-game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers at Wrigley Field, 7-6. The Cubs slugged 15 hits in the game and Pete Crow-Armstrong shined with a 3-for-5 performance with 4 RBI and a pair of home runs. He now has 26 home runs on the season. The Cubs are 66-49 and play a makeup game today at home vs the Toronto Blue Jays at 1:20 PM.
The Cincinnati Reds won their 3rd-straight game as they defeated the Athletics at home, 3-2. Matt McLain launched his 9th home run. The Reds improve to 55-58 overall and go for the 3-game sweep of the Athletics at home today at 11:40 AM.
The Chicago White Sox got shutout in Boston last night by the Red Sox, 4-0. Chicago only had 4 hits in the game. The White Sox are 59-54 on the year and look to avoid the 3-game sweep in Boston this evening at 6:10 PM.
