The Posey County Prosecutor's Office and Posey County Circuit Court are giving individuals with outstanding child support warrants an opportunity to resolve their case without being taken into custody. A Child Support Warrant Compliance Day will be held Thursday, July thirtieth, with court sessions scheduled for ten o'clock in the morning and one o'clock in the afternoon. Eligible individuals can voluntarily appear before a judge to have their warrant addressed and receive a new court date or additional instructions. Prosecutor Thomas Clowers says the event is designed to encourage compliance while reducing the need for arrests. Participants should bring a valid photo ID. Officials also stress that the event does not forgive unpaid child support or clear any criminal warrants unrelated to child support.
Students returning to school this fall in both the Mount Vernon and North Posey school districts will see a major change as Indiana's new "bell-to-bell" wireless device law takes effect. Under Indiana Senate Enrolled Act Seventy-Eight, students may not use personal wireless devices at any time during the school day. The law covers cell phones, smart watches, earbuds, tablets, laptops, gaming devices, and other personal electronics. The goal is to reduce distractions and improve student focus. Both Mount Vernon and North Posey have adopted bell-to-bell policies requiring devices to remain powered off, out of sight, and inaccessible from the first bell until dismissal, including during lunch and passing periods. Exceptions are allowed for documented medical needs, IEP or Five-Zero-Four accommodations, and emergencies approved by school officials. Parents needing to contact their child are encouraged to call the appropriate school office. School leaders say the new policy will create a safer, more focused learning environment while bringing local schools into compliance with Indiana law.
Family Matters of Posey County is helping local families prepare for the new school year with its annual Backpack Give-Away. The event will be held Tuesday, July twenty-eighth, from noon until three at Hedges Central Gymnasium in Mount Vernon. Registered students will receive a backpack filled with basic school supplies to help them start the school year ready to learn. Appointments are required, and families can register through the organization's Facebook page or by calling eight-one-two, eight-three-eight, six-eight-seven-five. Organizers say the annual program helps ease the financial burden on families while making sure local students have the supplies they need for a successful start to the school year.
Drivers traveling between eastern Posey County and western Vanderburgh County have some good news. The Broadway Avenue bridge at the county line has reopened to traffic more than two weeks ahead of schedule. The road had been closed since March between Posey County Line Road and Old Mount Vernon Road while crews replaced the aging bridge, which dated back to the 1930s. The project was funded through the Indiana Department of Transportation's Community Crossings Matching Grant Program. County officials say the bridge is now fully open, restoring a key connection between Posey and Vanderburgh counties well ahead of the original August seventh reopening date.
