Evansville's annual Fireworks on the Ohio celebration returns to downtown on Saturday evening. The Downtown Evansville Improvement District says festivities begin at 6:00 PM along Riverside Drive with more than 25 food trucks, plus free family activities including face painting and patriotic photo opportunities. Live entertainment starts at 7:30 PM with a performance by the Evansville Youth Music Collective, followed by the Indiana National Guard's 38th Infantry Division Rock Band at 8:00 PM outside Old National Bank. Holiday World & Splashin' Safari is making the biggest single-attraction investment in the park's history. They announced plans for Cannonball! a new 22-million-dollar water roller coaster set to open in May of 2027. The ride will lift passengers 90 feet into the air before sending them racing more than 1,000 feet along the track at speeds up to 45 miles an hour, ending with a splashdown. Park officials say Cannonball! will be the first water roller coaster of its kind in the Midwest and the fastest in the United States. The attraction is themed around a Fourth of July community pool party and a fictional cannonball diving competition in the town of Boulder Canyon, U.S.A. Designed by Germany-based Mack Rides, the coaster will feature five drops. Riders must be at least 42 inches tall with an adult or 48 inches tall to ride alone. Construction is already underway, with the grand opening planned for May 2027.
Extreme heat is delaying the start of live racing at Ellis Park. Track officials say opening day, originally scheduled for today, has been pushed back one day to tomorrow because of dangerous heat in the forecast. Officials say the horses that were scheduled to race today will instead compete on Monday, July 6th. The race schedule for Friday, Saturday's Fourth of July card, and Sunday remains unchanged. Track officials say they'll continue to monitor the forecast and make adjustments if conditions warrant.
