A potentially serious crash involving a train and a county highway truck ended without injuries Wednesday afternoon in Posey County. Dispatchers received a report shortly after 2:00 PM of a vehicle being struck by a train near Smith and Givens Road, close to the CountryMark Refinery in Mt. Vernon. Posey County Sheriff Tom Latham says a county highway department truck was attempting to cross the railroad tracks when the driver failed to see the approaching train. Authorities say the train struck the truck, sending it down an embankment where it rolled over once before coming to rest on all four tires. There were no injuries reported. Sheriff Latham says both the truck driver and everyone aboard the train escaped unharmed.
The Indiana State Police Evansville District is welcoming a new Public Information Officer. Sgt. Seth Rainey will take over the position following the retirement of Sgt. Todd Ringle, who concluded a law enforcement career spanning more than 40 years. Rainey brings more than a decade of experience with the Evansville District, serving as both a state trooper and K-9 handler. He says he has been looking forward to stepping into the new role and continuing to serve as a link between the department and the public. Sgt. Rainey officially assumes the duties of Public Information Officer on Sunday.
One of the Tri-State's longest-running summer traditions gets underway today as the annual Haubstadt Sommerfest opens for its three-day run. The festival features food, rides, live entertainment, and family activities. Events continue through Saturday, highlighted by the Laufenfest 5K, the Lil' Dutch Run, and the annual Sommerfest Parade. Organizers expect visitors from across the region to take part in the community celebration.
Yesterday, the Pocket Athletic Conference announced their all-conference teams for baseball. Mt. Vernon’s Luke Weintraut was named first-team all-conference, and Jackson Buse was named second-team all-conference. From North Posey Baseball, Remington Johnson was named to the honorable mention all-conference team. In conference play this season, North Posey Baseball finished in a 3-way tie for 3rd place with a 7-4 record and Mt. Vernon Baseball finished 9th with a 4-8 record.
On Wednesday in Major League Baseball, the St. Louis Cardinals couldn’t complete the 3-game sweep of the San Diego Padres at home as they lost the finale, 6-1. The Cardinals were outhit 14-6 in the game, as they drop to 40-32 overall. St. Louis starts a 3-game series at the Kansas City Royals tonight at 6:40 PM.
The Chicago Cubs scored 7 runs in the 2nd inning and were able to hang on for an 8-6 win at home vs the Colorado Rockies. Pete Crow-Armstrong launched his 15th home run and Dansby Swanson cracked his 8th home run. The Cubs took 2-of-3 in the series to improve to 39-36 and they have today off before welcoming the Toronto Blue Jays tomorrow afternoon for a 3-game set.
The Cincinnati Reds had a rough day at the office as they lost at home to the New York Mets, 9-1. The Reds still took 2-of-3 in the series. They are 35-38 on the season and have today off. Cincinnati travels to New York to take on the Yankees in a 3-game series tomorrow evening.
The Chicago White Sox lost at the New York Yankees last night, 10-5. Colson Montgomery had a multi-homer game, which gives him 19 home runs on the season. The White Sox slide to 38-34 on the year and they hope to salvage a game in the 3-game set at the Yankees tonight at 6:05 PM.
