Indiana has tied a historic tornado record after an extraordinary stretch of severe weather across the state. According to the National Weather Service, Indiana has now recorded 72 confirmed tornadoes in 2026, matching the all-time state record set in 2011. It's the highest annual tornado total since official records began in 1950. Much of the damage came during an exceptionally active month of June. So far, 53 tornadoes have been confirmed this month alone, shattering previous June records and accounting for nearly three-quarters of the year's total. The record could soon stand alone. National Weather Service meteorologists are continuing to survey and analyze recent storm damage, and officials say additional tornadoes may still be confirmed. If just one more twister is added to the count this year, 2026 will become Indiana's most active tornado year on record. For now, the Hoosier State has officially tied a record that many hoped would never be matched.
Officials with the Firefly Festival in New Harmony have announced that all festival activities scheduled for tomorrow have been canceled due to predicted severe weather. Organizers say they are disappointed to make the decision, but the safety of visitors, volunteers, and the community remains their top priority. The good news is that festival activities will continue as planned on Saturday. Saturday’s schedule includes firefly tours, live music, glow dance parties, food vendors, historic performances, a 5K Run/Walk, children’s activities, crafts, and much more. Festival organizers say the event offers the perfect blend of nature, history, and family fun in one of Indiana’s most historic communities. Construction crews are entering the final stretch of work on Section Three of the I-69 Ohio River Crossing project, with completion expected by the end of the year. The section includes three new approach bridges and connecting roadways on the Indiana side of the project in Evansville. Construction began in the fall of 2024 and is designed to pave the way for the future I-69 bridge across the Ohio River. Project officials say the new roads and bridges will provide all-weather access to the riverfront construction zone. Because much of the area sits within a flood plain, the elevated structures will help prevent delays caused by high water when work on the main river crossing begins. Crews are currently building the southbound lanes of the approach bridges, which will serve as construction access routes. The northbound lanes will be added later as part of Section Two. The final phase will return northbound I-69 traffic south of Green River Road to its original lane configuration and speed limit. While the bridges will be completed this year, they won't open to traffic until the new Ohio River crossing is finished. Construction on the main I-69 bridge is expected to begin in early 2027, with completion scheduled for 2031. The overall Ohio River Crossing project includes seven bridges, major interchange improvements in both Indiana and Kentucky, and the final connection of Interstate 69 between Evansville and Henderson.
