A Mt. Vernon woman and a Tennessee man are behind bars after a drug investigation on Evansville’s east side. The Vanderburgh County Sheriff’s Office says the Evansville-Vanderburgh County Drug Task Force received information that 38-year-old Carl Allen Junior was selling fentanyl out of an east side hotel. Detectives obtained a search warrant for Allen’s hotel room and say they later spotted him in the hotel lobby. Investigators say Allen tried to run from officers and threw more than 900 dollars in cash into the air, along with a plastic bag containing more than 17 grams of suspected fentanyl. After a short foot pursuit, detectives took Allen into custody. Authorities say 24-year-old Miah-Reighn Franklin of Mt. Vernon was inside the hotel room and also attempted to flee. Detectives say Franklin had two active felony warrants. During the search, investigators reportedly found digital scales, drug paraphernalia, suspected marijuana, trace amounts of suspected fentanyl, and a loaded handgun inside the room. Allen and Franklin are now facing multiple charges.
Indiana Governor Mike Braun is taking aim at distractions in the classroom. Braun has signed a new “Bell to Bell” law that limits student use of personal electronic devices during the school day. The new Indiana law covers cell phones, smart watches, gaming devices, and other electronic gadgets. State leaders say the goal is to help students stay focused, reduce classroom distractions, and give teachers more support during instruction time. Under the new law, schools across Indiana will now begin updating their policies on personal device use. The legislation does include some exceptions, including for emergencies and certain medical needs.
