Cincinnati headquartered Fifth Third Bank filed paperwork involving the closing of nineteen branches across the United States, one of which is here in Posey County. Of the nineteen closings, eight were in Ohio, four in Michigan, two in Kentucky, two in North Carolina and one each in Illinois, Georgia and the local Poseyville branch. Reports show the branch is scheduled to close on January 18th of 2024. 5/3rd bank presently occupies the historic Bozeman-Waters National Bank building at 19 main street in Poseyville which was built in 1924. The building, which has been on National Register of Historic Places since 1987 has been listed for sale.

 

Big Brothers and Big Sisters announced their largest fundraiser Bowl For Kids’ Sake for 2024 Their goal is to raise up to $150,000. Bowl For Kids’ Sake will take place at Franklin Lanes, Showplace Family Entertainment Center and Posey Lanes. This money will help give kids a chance to see what future they could have and what they can pursue. From this event, they are hoping they’ll get more people to be part of the program.

 

Coming up this Sunday, November 5th the Knights of St. John in St. Wendel is having a Fried Chicken Dinner. It will start at 10:30 AM. The cost is 14 dollars for adults and 7 dollars for children. The dinner is drive-thru only. It’s a chance to help raise money for Knights Home renovations.

 

The Alexandrian Public Library in Mt. Vernon is promoting their Dial-A-Story Program. It’s stories for children pre-recorded by your APL staff members. Listen anytime! Call 812-833-4300.

 

Sports:

Bob Knight, whose Hall of Fame coaching career was highlighted by three national titles at Indiana University -- one capping an undefeated season which still hasn’t been matched to this day -- and countless on-court outbursts, has died. He was 83. Knight's family made the announcement last night. He was hospitalized with an illness in April and had been in poor health for several years.

 

The North Posey Vikings Football team will play for a Sectional Championship this Friday night at home against Paoli at 6:30 PM. Tickets for this Friday’s game will be 7 dollars per person and available at the gate. No season or lifetime sports passes will be accepted per IHSAA playoff rules. If you can’t make it to the game, Jordan Fisher and Chris Morlan will have the radio broadcast on 98.9 FM WPIW, 106.7 FM WMVI, and online at poseycountyradio.com. Both teams are 10-1 on the year.

 

The Mount Vernon High School Gym Reveal is taking place this Friday night as the Mt. Vernon Girls Basketball team is taking on Harrison in the first girls basketball game of the season. Tickets are $6 per person, or you can get $1 off per can of food donated. 6 Cans will get you a free ticket for admission. All donations benefit the Mt. Vernon Food Pantry.

 

The North Posey Cheer Team is headed to State this weekend. They will perform on Saturday at New Castle High School. The competition begins at 10:00 AM with the large time-out division. The awards will take place at approximately 1:15 PM. The Vikings Cheer Team will perform their time-out routine at 11:10 AM.

 

In sports from last night…The Texas Rangers for the first time in franchise history are World Series Champions. They won Game 5 last night in Arizona against the Diamondbacks, 5-0. After splitting the first two games in Texas, the Rangers won all 3 games on the road in Arizona.

From the NBA, the Indiana Pacers got rocked in Boston by the Celtics 155-104. Indiana is now 2-2 on the year and the Pacers return home on Friday to take on Cleveland.
