A New Harmony man will spend ten years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple drug and firearm charges in Posey County. 68-year-old Michael Roettger was sentenced on Wednesday in Posey Circuit Court. Roettger pleaded guilty to seven charges, including unlawful possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, possession of methamphetamine, unlawful possession of a syringe, and maintaining a common nuisance involving controlled substances. He also pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges involving marijuana, drug paraphernalia, and operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Court records show deputies were called to a single-vehicle crash late on March 21st, 2025. When officers arrived, they said Roettger, who was identified as the driver, showed signs of impairment. Roettger told investigators he had used methamphetamine before driving and said he had more meth at his home. Investigators obtained a search warrant for the residence. During the search, officers found methamphetamine, marijuana, drug paraphernalia, a syringe and multiple firearms. Prosecutors say Roettger is classified as a serious violent felon under Indiana law because of a previous conviction for dealing methamphetamine. That classification prohibits him from possessing firearms. Roettger will be transported to the Indiana Department of Correction to serve his ten-year sentence.
Mt. Vernon River Days begins tomorrow in downtown Mt. Vernon. The two-day community festival is on Friday and Saturday. Friday’s highlights include the opening ceremony at 11:00 AM, the Smoke on the Ohio Barbecue Competition, live music throughout the day, and a fireworks show at 9:00 PM. Saturday’s events start with the River Days 5K Run at 8:00 AM. Saturday also features a Classic Car Show, a Tractor Display, a Corn Hole Tournament, more Barbecue Competition, and a Talent Show. The festival’s annual parade, which this year is honoring first responders and remembering 9/11, is set for 4:00 PM on Saturday. Live music continues Saturday evening, and the Mt. Vernon River Days concludes at 8:00 PM on Saturday.
North Posey Football Senior Running Back, Cade Mauck is in the running for the Courier and Press Player of the Week. The West Side Nut Club Fall Festival is less than a month away, and now is the time to save some money on the rides. The Nut Club is offering pre-sale, all-you-can-ride wristband vouchers for $25 each through October 4th. After that, the price goes up to $30. There is a service fee for online purchases, but it’s charged just once, regardless of how many vouchers you buy. Once you make your purchase, simply bring the voucher to the ticket booth at the Fall Festival to redeem it for a wristband. The West Side Nut Club Fall Festival takes over Franklin Street October 5th-10th.
Mesker Park Zoo officials are temporarily closing the Amazonia building for an improvement project. The zoo says work on the building’s boardwalk will begin Monday, September 21st. The project is designed to make the boardwalk safer and more accessible for visitors. Because of the construction, the entire Amazonia building will be closed until the work is complete. Zoo officials say they’ll provide updates on when the building will reopen.
Last night in local high school sports, North Posey Volleyball lost at home vs North in four sets. The loss ends the Vikings six-match winning streak and are now 7-4 on the season.
North Posey Boys Tennis lost at Tecumseh, 5-0. The Vikings are 7-5 and 5-2 in the PAC.
This evening in local high school sports, North Posey Volleyball takes on Memorial on the road. The JV match is at 5:30 PM and the Varsity match is at 7:00 PM.
