Mt. Vernon High School Athletics has announced that Head Boys Basketball Coach, Doug Novsek, has stepped down from his position. Robin Duncan has been named Interim Head Coach and will lead the Wildcat program moving forward, with formal approval by the MSD of Mt. Vernon School Board expected at its next meeting. Coach Novsek went 13-11 and 7-5 in the Pocket Athletic Conference in his lone season as the head coach. In his resignation, Coach Novsek shared that he is only stepping down, “because I have been afforded a chance to pursue an opportunity outside of coaching that I have desired to do for quite some time. I am extremely grateful…the support I received from the Mt. Vernon community is something I will never forget. The Novsek family will be Wildcat fans for life.” Duncan takes over the program after being on staff last season as the JV Coach. He is an Evansville Harrison High School Grad, played Division One College Basketball at the University of Vermont, and professionally in Denmark and the Netherlands.
Governor Mike Braun is taking action on housing affordability in Indiana. He has ceremonially signed House Enrolled Act 1001, aimed at boosting housing construction and expanding homeownership opportunities for Hoosier families. The new law requires cities, towns, and counties to identify barriers to housing development and hold at least one public hearing this year to explore solutions. Suggested changes include reducing parking requirements, allowing smaller lots, increasing housing density, and easing design rules that can raise costs. Local governments must also submit annual housing reports to the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority to track progress and better understand market demand. State officials say the measure builds on broader efforts, including the READI 2.0 program. In Gibson County, a $2 million state investment recently helped generate over $14 million in private funding for 110 new apartments. Leaders say the goal is to increase housing supply, lower costs, and expand access to homeownership across Indiana.
The Posey County Health Department is once again rolling out its annual mosquito control program as summer gets underway. Spraying efforts are set to begin soon, part of a routine seasonal push to cut down mosquito populations and reduce the risk of mosquito-borne illness. As crews prepare, officials are asking local beekeepers to check in. The department says it will work to avoid spraying near registered hives but needs updated location information to do that effectively. Beekeepers are encouraged to call 812-838-1328 with their address and any concerns so routes can be adjusted. Health officials say the program is designed to protect public health while minimizing impacts on pollinators and the local environment.
