Welcome back to school, Mt. Vernon and North Posey students. Today was the first day of school for all MSD of Mt. Vernon and North Posey students and it was a full day of school. In the EVSC, students with the last name A-J attended school yesterday and today. Tomorrow and Thursday, students with the last name K-Z will attend. All EVSC students will be in school on Friday. Posey County Radio wishes everyone a successful and fun school year.

 

The Mt. Vernon Police Department wants to remind the community to watch out for all the students heading back to school. Starting today, officers will be rigidly enforcing school bus stop arm violations as well as school zone speeding. They encourage you to give yourself extra time so accidents can be avoided.

 

North Posey High School says All-Sports passes are available for purchase starting today in the High School Office. Passes are good for all High School and Jr. High School home regular season athletic events. The cost of the passes for students are 45 dollars and the first 100 students who purchase their athletic pass will receive a “Protect the Brand T-Shirt” courtesy of Barton Automotive Services. All-Sports passes for adults are 95 dollars and for Seniors they are 75 dollars. You can also receive a Family Pass for 200 dollars which is good for up to 4 people living in the same home.

 

The Alexandrian Public Library in Mt. Vernon has announced a Weekly Drawing and Watercolor Workshop Series for Adults. It will take place on Thursday’s from 10:00 AM until 12:00 PM. There is no charge to take this series, but you are asked to bring your own art supplies. Space is limited and you must register for this weekly series. Cancer Pathways Midwest will offer cancer screenings this week. They are holding a screening event to assess people's risk for hereditary cancer. Those who meet the criteria will be offered an appointment for genetic counseling and testing. The event takes place on Thursday, August 10th, at 5:30 p.m. at the Cancer Pathways Midwest building along Vogel Rd. in Evansville.

 

Coming up this Friday it is Scrimmage week for High School Football teams across the Tri-State and then a week from Friday (August 18th) is Week 1 of the season. Yesterday, the Indiana Football Coaches Association released their first rankings of year, and several Tri-State teams were ranked. In Class 5A, Castle is 8th. Class 4A has Reitz 4th and Memorial 8th. Class 3A rankings include Gibson Southern 4th, Southridge 5th, and Vincennes 18th. In Class 2A, Mater Dei is 1st and North Posey is 12th. Then in Class 1A, Tecumseh is 12th.

 

Sports

  • The St. Louis Cardinals (49-64) start a 3-game series down south in Tampa against the Rays at 5:40 PM. Catch the game on 106.7 FM WMVI.  

 

  • The Chicago Cubs (58-55) play game 2 of their series in New York against the Mets at 6:10 PM.  

 

  • The Cincinnati Reds (60-55) continue their series at home with the Miami Marlins at 5:40 PM.    

 

  • The Chicago White Sox (46-68) take on the New York Yankees at home at 7:10 PM. The White Sox are going for their 4th-straight win.
