A Mt. Vernon man was arrested after police say they were called to West 5th Street for a complaint of a strong odor of fumes coming from an apartment. According to a release, when officers arrived on scene residents told them the smell had made its way into other attached apartments. Police say as they continued their investigation, they could smell something similar to acetone coming from an apartment. Officers were unable to get someone to respond from inside the suspected apartment, which resulted in them getting a search warrant. A release shows officers found 55-year-old Kenneth Koontz inside the apartment. During their search, police say they found a used bong, and a glass pipe with meth residue on it. Koontz was then arrested and taken to the Posey County Jail. Police say while at the jail, Koontz even made a comment to them that he uses meth at night to “get his house cleaned.”

 

Coming up tonight at the North Posey Auditorium is the North Posey Holiday Bash. It will feature the North Posey Jr and Sr High School band, choir, and art students, as well as 6th grade band students. There will be special art displays, toy donation buckets, and pictures with Santa will take place before and after the concert. The concert starts at 7:00 PM and the auditorium doors open at 6:30 PM.

 

The Posey County Solid Waste District announced that the last tox-away day of 2023 will be this Thursday, December 7th from 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM at the Mt. Vernon Recycling Center. The next Tox-away day will be in March. For more information you can call 812-838-1613.

 

The Indianapolis Colts and IFCA (Indiana Football Coaches Association) announced their Indiana High School Academic All-Star Team today, and North Posey Football’s Jackson Graff made the team. Only 24 players among all classes in the entire state of Indiana make the team - 11 offensive, 11 defensive, and 2 special teams. Graff is the second North Posey player to ever make this very prestigious team. Matthew Hostettler made the team back in 2005.

 

Christmas on Main Street in Mt. Vernon is coming up this Friday evening. The night starts with the parade at 7:00 PM. Then at 7:50 PM the lighting of the Christmas Tree will take place. Saturday’s events include the Kids Christmas Party from 12:00-4:00 PM, a Jeep Jamboree along the riverfront from 2:00-6:00 PM, and there will be food trucks along the riverfront from 3:00-7:00 PM. It’s a chance for the community to enjoy the holiday spirit and visit some local shops in downtown Mount Vernon.

 

Sports from last night…in Men’s College Basketball, 4th ranked Purdue hammered Iowa at home 87-68. The Boilermakers improve to 8-1 on the season. Zach Edey had 25 points and 12 rebounds in the win.

From the NBA, the Indiana Pacers took out the Boston Celtics at home, 122-112. Last nights game was apart of the quarterfinals round in the NBA’s In-Season Tournament. Tyrese Haliburton collected his first triple-double of his career with 26 points, 10 rebounds, and 13 assists. The Pacers are now 11-8 on the year.

 

Sports tonight…in high school action North Posey Boys Basketball heads to Day School. The varsity tips off at 7:00 PM. North Posey Girls Basketball welcomes Southridge at 6:00 PM. Mt. Vernon Girls Basketball is home against Mater Dei as the varsity game tips at 7:00 PM.

In local college basketball this evening…the Evansville Purple Aces Men’s Basketball team travels to 14th ranked BYU at 8:00 PM. The Purple Aces are 7-1 on the season.

Indiana Men’s Basketball heads to Michigan for an 8:00 PM game. IU is 6-1 on the year.
